So I've been having a few problems syncing photos to my iDevices.  I could just never get them all to sync, always failing when it reached an image file, so through the process of elimination, I removed said file from the folder.  That didn't work it came up with another file (you can see where this is going right), removed that one, same again, removed folder, same again, different file in different folder.  So I did a restore from back up and no change.

So first thought!  iTunes must be corrupted, so uninstall, reinstall, no cigar, same problem – bugga!

Second thought, might be the external hard drive, so I moved 10,566 photo's from my external (USB 2.0 to my Computer HDD) – Not long, 30 minutes (time for a cuppa tea and a bicice) – Pointed iTunes (the nice new fresh install but with the old restore files) to the new location and HEY PRESTO! – Nothing Same problem.

AHA You Say!  Must be the restore files, why not do a fresh restore, not from back up and then you can just upload all of the photos again and Bobs your uncle! – Well this was going to take a while so I set it on it's merry way just before 10.30am before I headed into work.

At about 1.30 I remoted into my PC from the office (Looked for my iPad to do it, but I couldn't find it – Idiot!) and noticed that it still said "importing photo's".

Thought nothing of it, because it would have been launch week 2010 when I did the last major sync so I couldn't remember how long it took.

Anyway just after 3 I got home to the same screen doing the same thing and thought, bugga this, stopped the sync got a "error reading from device" and looked at the albums on iPad to a big FAT ZERO number of photos.

Right then, so it must be Windows Vista's fault.  It hadn't failed me since installation but that was 18 months ago, last decade in fact, so time for a refresh.  As all I had on the the computer was applications (and now 10566 photos, yes I moved them not copied), I moved the photo's back to the external drive (time for a cuppa tea and biccie) and then formated and restored from system backup to the original factory install (YUCK!).

So now I had a completely refreshed computer with Windows Vista and a couple of hours of Service Pack upgrades, a restored from new iPad and jumped in and sync'ed my iPad again to upload all my photo's again – WRRRRRRRONG! same problem, no photo's just keeps spinning it's wheels.

Used Expletive!

I looked at the photo settings in iTunes and after much frustration, expletives and a cuppa, I pointed iTunes to the sample photo's that get installed with Windows in the Pictures folder on my computer and clicked Sync. – HAZZZZZAARR, something different happened, Optimizing 1 of 7, then 2 of 7, then 3 of 7, then 7 of 7, and then it said Copying to iPad and then Finishing Sync, Sync Completed and when I raised my iPad to eye level, tapped on the Photo's icon, I saw (you guessed it) 7 images.

Used Expletive!

So I copied an photo into the folder to join the 7 images now adorning my iPad, clicked Sync and TA DDAAA!  SUCCESS!

Used Expletive!

Now I first thought about copying the other 10554 photo's into this life boat folder but decided to see what was in the images folder.  I went searching through that folder like a sailor looking for a leak in a submarine and there it was.  The IPOD PHOTO CACHE folder.  Could this be the culprit?  With all the moving and pointing from location to location, the cache and any information in it would be out of date from when I first sync'ed photos.

It made sense, What to do now.  DELETE THE CACHE, I could hear myself yelling, like Custer yelled Charge at Little Big Horn.  But this time, we would win, after deleting the 15GB cache, changing iTunes to select a single folder of 98 images and pressing Sync, "Optimizing 1 of 98".  Success again.

So changed iTunes to sync all photo's, Clicked the button and got "Optimizing 1 of 10566", now looking across at my other monitor it says "Optimizing 6957 of 10566" so I'm going to get a beer.

Used Expletive.

Thought I would share the experience and the journey. I'm assuming the same for the iTunes cache for music, but I don't have an on my iPad at the moment, will burn that bridge shortly.
