iPad 2 coming – Rumour Roundup [Poll]

iPad 2 coming!

Hi All, My name is Chris and I am Dan’s brother. I am going to be writing posts on the site whilst Dan and Steve are unable to. I am based in the UK, but previously lived in Seattle (hence the username). I, much like Dan, am hooked on Apple and keep my ear to the ground for the latest news. I will not be doing loads of posts, just some to fill the void and don’t worry I’ll be keeping them as relevant to New Zealand as always. My thoughts and prayers are with all that have been affected by the quake, we can only imagine how hard these times are for you. Be strong New Zealand.

OK with the intro over, on to the iPad 2! I thought I’d do a rumour roundup ahead of tomorrows press event and run a poll to see what you think we’ll see.…

Grab our new iPhone app and donate to the NZ Red Cross Earthquake Appeal

iPnz News and Carrier Settings

We have just launched our second iPhone app in the App Store, which provides feeds from our site and iPhone settings for every NZ carrier, among other things. We are charging for this app so that we can give something back to the people of Christchurch following Tuesday’s deadly quake. The App is priced at $2.59 until the end of March and all proceeds from our cut of the sales will go to the NZ Red Cross (30% will still go to Apple, which we cannot avoid). Why not download it now to give to the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal.

Remember you are not paying for the app itself, you are paying to donate to the NZ Red Cross.…

It’s on: iPad 2 event confirmed for March 2nd (3rd for NZ)

Not so cryptic

Apple have begun sending out invites for an event scheduled for March 2nd, and here’s a copy of the one received by Engadget. The graphic on the invite features a Calendar app icon where the focus is clearly on the number ’2′, and a peel-away in the corner reveals an iPad. The text on the graphic reads ‘Come see what 2011 will be the year of’, obviously referring to the fact that 2010 was quite widely accepted as the year of the iPad (1) as far as tech goes. My only hope is that the convention of renaming the device year-upon-year as has happened with the iPhone doesn’t happen with the iPad and that it remains as simply ’iPad’, as is the case for almost all other Apple products. Actually, who am I kidding: my real only hope is that our invitation is in the post!

PS: We’re still not back in full swing, but as I’m lead here not sleeping (again) I simply couldn’t ignore posting this. Stay strong, Canterbury.

Refurbished iPads hit the NZ Apple Store

Good savings

Look — we’re not about to recommend that anyone go out and buy a current-generation iPad right now with the much-speculated iPad 2 just around the corner, but if you’ve been thinking of buying an iPad, are happy with the current feature-set and don’t care that the new, camera-toting models are most likely just a few months away, then the online Apple Store might have the deal you’ve been holding out for. iPad as sole means of mobile communication: is it possible?

iPad as Telephone

A question I get asked a lot and I’m sure some of you will have been asked, too, is “why do you need an iPhone and an iPad?” The honest answer (although rarely admitted) is you don’t need both… you just want them both.

Recently I have been considering saying goodbye to my iPhone 4 and once released later this year using a 64gb WiFi 3G iPad 2 as my sole means of communication. No this is not an early April fools’ and yes, you did read that correctly: goodbye, iPhone 4.

I realise the stage I have chosen to propose ditching the iPhone 4 on could have been better. Proposing this to iPhone enthusiasts on an iPhone blog isn’t going to be an easy sell but before you judge me and shout blasphemy carry on reading to find out why.

Sygic to force ‘upgrade’ from Mobile Maps to Aura?

So long, Mobile Maps. It was nice knowing you.

Any of you that have been with us from the start will know that Sygic Mobile Maps was one of the first turn-by-turn apps produced for New Zealand and the first that we ever reviewed, and well… let’s just say it holds a special place in our hearts. A year or so after Mobile Maps hit the store, Sygic launched a second turn-by-turn app, Aura.

Since the launch of Aura, both apps have happily co-existed side-by-side as two distinct products, allowing consumers to choose which of the two suits them most and purchase accordingly. Now, however, it would seem that Sygic have disowned their first-born, and will convert Mobile Maps to Aura via a software update whether you like it or not. While we’re certain that Sygic are rolling out with the best of intentions, we don’t think it’s right. Read on for our thoughts.…

XT’s bonus top up credit ends, everything’s gonna be 33% more

XT's new prepaid promo

Since the 13th October 2009 any Telecom XT prepaid mobile customer that topped up would receive an additional bonus credit depending on how much you topped up.
