Get a 2degrees Huawei E5 3G WiFi router and FaceTime anywhere
When FaceTime was launched I was excited about it, OK we already have Skype for voice and a plethora of other video calling apps, but there was something about FaceTime that seemed different and unique. However once all the details emerged and we found out that you couldn’t FaceTime over 3G I was disappointed to say the least and begun to find that FaceTime was more of a gimmick that I could show my mates when they came round the house but not make much use of in everyday life. Well, until FaceTime over 3G officially eventuates I think I have the answer… with a little help from the 2degrees Huawei E5 3G WiFi router. Keep reading to see how you can FaceTime anywhere (without Jailbreaking)……
Read MoreVodafone acknowledges 3G issues, fix coming
Last week, we reported on allegations of serious issues with Vodafone’s 3G network, including network drop-outs and failed calls and messaging. A couple of days ago Vodafone formally acknowledged the issue in their forums offering an IT Crowd-style “turn it off and back on again” work-around which was less than ideal, but at 5pm yesterday evening an update was posted to advise that a fix had been identified and that it would be rolled out as soon as possible. Read on for Vodafone’s announcement and post your reactions.…

Despite the alleged problems we mentioned earlier this week, it would seem that the folks at Vodafone are still very committed to improving the quality of the speed of their network. Read MoreiOS 4.2 goes Gold Master
Can you smell that? That’s the sweet, sweet smell of AirPlay and AirPrint drawing closer and closer! Yes, folks, it’s November – the month that iOS 4.2 goes live, and it’s tantalisingly close now as the beta has wrapped up and the GM (Gold Master) release has just become available to registered developers. AirPlay hasn’t been available in any of the betas so it’ll certainly be good to have a play with that – obviously Apple felt it didn’t need any actual ‘testing’ from the dev community. We’ll be installing it on our iPads and iPhone 4s later and will report back with our thoughts. If you’re lucky, there might be some footage of AirPlay streaming to our Apple TV, too. Yay!
UPDATE: Well, it would appear that AirPlay now works for audio, but not for video. We suspect that an Apple TV firmware update will be required to enable this and suspect we will be seeing that when iOS 4.2 goes live for the masses. AirPrint is also a no-go as it would seem that compatibility is now limited to specific AirPrint-certified printers.
UPDATE 2: Okay, AirPrint does work with any printer shared on your LAN via Bonjour as promised at the keynote. The release notes are poorly worded and confused me!…
Read MoreAre you experiencing data, text or voice issues on your iPhone’s Vodafone connection?
The team at iPhonewzealand use Telecom XT for our iPhones, so this has gone under the radar for us until now, but a can of worms has been opened for Vodafone over at Geekzone. Site moderator sbiddle opened a thread in which he described the issues he is currently experiencing with data sessions on his Nokia E71 stalling, SMS messages neither being delivered nor received and voice calls going straight to voicemail. According to his posts and blog, Vodafone CSRs refused to accept that this was a real issue, so sbiddle turned to Geekzone to see if anybody else was experiencing the same issues. Boy did the floodgates open……
Read More2degrees launches aggressive new long-term mobile broadband plan
2degrees have just announced a new mobile broadband plan, and it’s insanely cheap. Providing 12GB (yes, 12!) of data that can last 180 days (6 months) for $150, the plan works out (spread over its maximum duration) as 2GB per month for $25 per month. Not only is that cheap for mobile broadband, it also undercuts the price of traditional ADSL broadband. Telecom, for example, start their ADSL offerings at $41 for 3GB.
It’s amazing what a third competitor in the mobile market has done to data pricing in the last year or so, and it’s great to see continued innovation. We can see this appealing to not just heavy mobile users, but also to lighter home users. Add in the Huawei WiFi router on offer for just $129 and you’ve got an entirely portable wireless broadband network that’s perfect for the likes of WiFi-only iPads and iPod touches.

Read MoreAsk iPhonewzealand: How much will FaceTime cost to use over 3G?
FaceTime, FaceTime, FaceTime! Unless you have just moved to Earth from outer space you will know that this is Apple’s new video calling service. Compatible FaceTime devices thus far are the iPhone 4, the iPod touch 4th Gen and (as of last week) any Mac with a camera running Snow Leopard.
Aside from the odd launch hiccup and Mac security bug which has now been fixed, we at iPhonewzealand could not be more impressed with FaceTime. The only downside is talking to people with FaceTime uses data, but how much does it use? and what is a call going to cost you to make or receive? Carry on reading to find out.…
Read MoreAll trace of white iPhone 4 vanishes from Apple Store
Has the white iPhone 4 really been delayed… or has it gone forever? The online Apple Store has been tweaked this morning to remove all reference to the white model as the screenshot above shows. Previously, the white iPhone 4 was shown but a notice made it clear it was currently unavailable for purchase. Make of it what you will, but clearly Cupertino would rather you just ditch the great white hope altogether for now and go black.…

No matter what you think of politicians, it would seem that at least a few of them are trying to work smarter by using iPhones and iPads to help them streamline their schedules and clear their busy in-boxes. But according to a NZPA story published on stuff.co.nz today, a spectacular misunderstanding of the technology has caused these MPs to be locked out of the parliamentary LAN.…

If you’re waiting for the white iPhone 4, it might just be time to reconsider how long you’re prepared to wait. An Apple spokesperson is quoted with an apology for disappointed customers, so it sounds like they have their facts straight. Are you waiting? What do you plan to do now? Hit us up in the comments.…
