iPhonewzealand Home screen icon
In this edition of iPhone basics we are going to take a look at Web Clips. I know what you’re thinking, “I thought everyone knew about this little feature”, but after I was asked by someone “what’s that App” whilst pointing at the Home screen icon for iPhonewzealand and their reaction after telling them what it was, I realise maybe not everyone knows. Every little helps
After a shakey launch and initial few months, MobileMe has once again become an attractive proposition not just for iPhone users but for Mac users and even PC users. But its price point of $140 per year is pretty steep, and places it out-of-reach for many would-be users including myself. So what are the alternatives? In this article I will show you how to get the MobileMe experience using free alternatives.

3.0.1 is go!
Apple have released an iPhone update this morning - 3.0.1. The update is a very minor one which does nothing more than patch an SMS vulnerabity highlighted yesterday. Do not confuse this with 3.1 which is still in beta – tethering for XT remains unaffected by updating to this release so go ahead and download it. Remember to hit ‘Update’ rather than ‘Restore’ to save you the task of having to re-apply our carrier bundle.
To continue development with iPhone SDK 3.0 on your iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS running iPhone OS 3.0.1 will need to perform the following: Click Here

WAP! Urgh!
TradeMe. The iconic kiwi site that everybody loves to love. Despite some questionable changes to the desktop version of the site of late, TradeMe is a shining example of a site done right. eBay could well take some pointers from this home-spun online success story, but as far as mobile goes the opposite is true.

Weapon of choice?
According to campaignmonitor.com, the iPhone now commands a 5.78% marketshare of all email clients, outstripping even GMail. This is pretty big news, considering that the iPhone has only been around for just over two years and that it’s a mobile client. No other mobile clients even make the radar. Not that we’re surprised – the iPhone mail app is by far the best email client I’ve ever used, mobile or desktop. Hit the link to get the full details.

Music to my ears!
I just came across this great project to map all free / nearly-free (with a coffee or other minor purchase) wifi hotspots in New Zealand. Lord knows we’re not exactly flush with them here in Aotearoa so it’s good to know where they are! Top work! Let’s help the project out and add any hotspots that we know of by hitting up the link below. Ain’t crowd-sourcing sweet?
