Read MorePrivacy and security issues highlight why FaceTime now needs an approval system
After today’s Back to the Mac event the first thing that any self-respecting Mac owner did was go and download the beta of FaceTime. I did, and I have to say it is fantastic. So simple to set up and use that literally anyone could do it (including your computer illiterate inlaws), however whilst Steve and I were discussing how great it was we realised there are a couple of fatal flaws that *could* keep users away… privacy and security.…

We weren’t going to post about Apple’s Back to the Mac event, assuming it would be irrelevant to iOS devices… we were wrong! Like never before, Apple are converging their two platforms to bring the user experiences and capabilities closer together. FaceTime for Mac launches today in beta form (yay!), iLife ’11 goes on sale today with a new version of iPhoto that very closely resembles the Photos app on iPad, and an App Store for Mac with the same one-click-install and home screen icons as iOS is coming within the next 90 days. Read MoreAccessory review: Kensington Dash Mount
My iPhone 4 is my car’s best friend. It’s my music source, my hands-free phone, and my GPS unit. But it’s none of these things without a suitable windshield or dashboard mount. After getting through two generic Chinese knock-off windshield mounts that I had gambled on (they were cheap) and lost, I realised it was time to spend some money on a ‘real’ car solution. I ultimately chose the Kensington Dash Mount from MacSense, but how does it stack up? …

Read MoreHands-on: iPad Keyboard Dock
When I got my iPad one of the first things I did, and I am sure you did as well, is look at what accessories I was going to buy. On the list were a Case, the Camera Connection Kit and some kind of stand or dock. I have always struggled with whether I wanted a dock / stand as I was never really sure what I wanted and what I wanted it to do. So when Apple offered to send us the iPad Keyboard Dock for review I jumped at the chance to see if it would meet my requirements. Read MoreUpdated apps from Sygic offer more GPS navigation goodness for NZ
If you’ve read through our GPS navigation app reviews, you’ll know that we’re pretty big fans of Sygic’s Mobile Maps app. A few weeks back, Sygic’s ‘next-gen’ GPS app, Aura, hit the Store but we never got round to reviewing it. Well, now Aura has received a significant update in the form of version 2.0, and an update to the original Mobile Maps has hit the store, so we thought we’d take a look to see whether either app has what it takes in today’s GPS market. …
Read MoreNoel Leeming and the iPhone: The facts (updated 15/10 6:21am)
Earlier this week, we published an article (a rumour-piece) based on a tip-off from a Noel Leeming employee who claimed that Noel Leeming and Bond and Bond stores were about to start selling the iPhone contract-free. When I called a store the following day, what our tipster told us was confirmed by that store. However, today we’ve received an email from Noel Leeming’s online communications manager who has pointed us to the facts: and unfortunately they’re not as exciting as we thought.…

Read MoreApple aware of NZ’s alarm clock plight, software update on the way
For those of you still frustrated with the alarm clock situation, don’t panic. We already know that iOS 4.2 will fix the issue when it lands in November, but today we received word from an Apple spokesperson that they’re aware of the situation and that a software update is forthcoming. Unfortunately, however, they couldn’t confirm whether this software update was iOS 4.2 itself or an interim bug-fix update for 4.1. New confusion arose when the issue appeared to have fixed itself over the weekend, but then mysteriously stopped working again this morning. It’s great to know that Apple are aware of the situation and are open to talking to us about it, but let’s hope this gets fixed sooner rather than later as changing time zones in Time Zone Support isn’t ideal.…
Read MoreKiwi App Review: Deal Shrimp keeps track of your daily deal sites
Those daily deal sites? They’re addictive! For me, the addiction started with 1-day.co.nz, and grew as I became acquainted with offtheback.co.nz, 3deals.co.nz and more. Now, there are dozens of these sites and staying on top off what’s on offer can be a challenge. So I was delighted to happen across Deal Shrimp recently, a free kiwi app which lets your iPhone do all the hard yards so all you have to do is blow the cobwebs off your wallet.…

If your body clock is still reeling from this week’s unwelcome surprise, you’ll be as glad as I was to learn that the issue is fixed in iOS 4.2 beta 2 which hit the internets just hours ago.
