"Let down": Paul Reynolds, Telecom CEO
Telecom CEO Paul Reynolds has fronted-up to journalists at a press conference this afternoon over last night’s further XT outage, and the situation as a whole. He said that the company recognises the inconvenience that customers have been put to and announced a further compensation package for both consumer and business XT customers. An angry Reynolds spoke of how he feels “let down” by network operator Alcatel-Lucent, that “enough is enough” and that the company have been “put on notice” following this fourth outage. it's Official
Tracking your parcels via your iPhone seems like such an obvious thing to be able to do. Previously we had to rely on third party apps CourierPost (Lite & Pro) and Parcels to do this but now New Zealand Post have released their official app.
We are going to do a more in-depth review and comparison of all four apps soon but in the meantime we just thought we’d give you a heads up about the app. FYI from what we’ve seen so far we really like the app, it’s the little attention to detail that makes the difference.

Ask iPhonewzealand
Every day we receive lots of emails from people who have bought either a new iPhone 3GS or 3G, or have bought an original iPhone via Trademe or eBay, and they are confused as to which networks they can use it on or whether it’s unlocked or can do this-or-that. We’re not surprised, it’s certainly not easy trying to get your head around it all, particularly if you’ve only just started looking and are trying to size the lay of the land. To help you understand the differences between each of the three models, how they work with each of the main three networks here in New Zealand and to help you pick the phone that’s right for you, we’ve put together a handy comparison guide. Hit the ‘Read More’ link to view the guide on-screen or to download a printable PDF.

Calling all parents!
8Interactive, an iPhone development group based in Wellington, have contacted us with regards to an app they are developing which requires a closed beta environment to test and refine the product before it can be finalised and sent to Apple for approval on the App Store. They are seeking iPhone owners in Wellington who have children aged three to seven to take part, and an iPod touch is up for grabs for one lucky participant. Hit the link for further details and contacts.

Down on the farm...
OK so this has nothing to do with the iPhone, but I’m certain you’ll forgive me for the diversion. The NZ Film Archive have just launched a celebration of classic kiwi TV ads from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s which they’ve cleverly called Sellebration, and whaddya know… there’s a locally made ad for the Apple II in the line-up! It’s funny stuff that is sure to strike a chord of nostalgia with anyone who remembers this from its original run, but it’s also kind of sad to see how far we’ve come, and yet how far we are from the likelihood of this ever happening again. Hit ‘read more’ for the link, and while you’re there stick around for the rest of the collection.

All ears
Voice Control: it takes some getting used to, that’s for sure. Back in August last year I was ranting about how useless it is, but now that I’ve got the hang of it I’m finding it incredibly useful, especially while in the car (more about that later). When I talk to other iPhone owners who struggle with or have simply given up on trying to use this feature, I get the sense that the problem lies with Apple’s lack of easy-to-find documentation: It’s the one part of the OS that really does need some explanation and can’t really be picked up on intuition alone. That being the case, here is our guideĀ to getting the most out of this misunderstood feature, and how to disable it.

Competition heats up
So we thought Telecom weren’t wholesaling the new XT network for a while yet, but it turns out that come April Digital Island will be providing us with another mobile player, and more importantly one that you can use the iPhone on. Read More
