White iPhone 4 available in NZ from today (or tomorrow?)

Tomorrow, tomorrow, we love you tomorrow.

Well, this has been a long time coming and you’d have to be a pretty staunch fan of the colour white to have stuck it out this long, but Apple have officially confirmed that the white iPhone 4 will be available in New Zealand from today. Pricing and specs are identical to the existing black model, and you’ll be able to order from the online store. The full press release is after the break but note that while the PR groups the NZ  and US release date as 28/04, the Apple NZ website currently says ‘coming tomorrow’ and is still absent from the store itself so our guess is that we’re looking at a release date of 28/04 US time, which is of course 29/04 here.

UPDATE: The white iPhone is now available through Vodafone.

UPDATE 2: The Apple Store website is currently down. Expect to find White iPhone 4′s when it comes back up.…

Reader Review: iPad Apps for University Students

iPad Apps for University

I originally bought my iPad 2 to play with, but I thought wouldn’t it be great if I could use it for University (at least then it’d be a whole lot easier to justify) so I embarked on an app spending spree to find the right ones. I decided to write an introduction to the ones I use from a practicality point of view.  To give you some context, I’m a Civil Engineering student, at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, and will be discussing this in reference to my lecture experiences.…

iPhone visual notification indicator – are you for or against?

Visual Notification?

Here on the 165th floor of iPhonewzealand Towers believe it or not Steve and I don’t always see eye-to-eye. In fact a lot of times he will have some crazy idea that I just think is utter madness or I will have some GENIUS idea that he just can’t see. Well today we had the former so we thought we’d put it to you to see what you thought (yes I realise I could be setting myself up for a whole load of mocking).…

TIP: Make your Xtra or Yahoo! mail push reliably to your iPhone

Ready to push

For as long as I have had an iOS device, I have had my Xtra mail configured as a Yahoo! account, which is widely advertised as providing push mail to the iPhone. The trouble is, I’ve found it incredibly unreliable, and so have others. And it’s not just Xtra mail that seems to be affected, but all Yahoo! mail – my wife’s own @yahoo.com email address suffers the same problem with unreliable push. Sometimes it works, albeit slowly, but most-times it simply doesn’t push at all. A few days ago I decided to do some experimenting and I found a solution – push is now instant and reliable. How? Keep reading for the instructions.…

Kiwi App Review: TrapIt

TrapIt by local developer Little Geek

TrapIt is an iPhone and iPod touch game made by local developer Little Geek. The premise of the game is to trap these little coloured prisms by ‘fencing’ off areas with your finger, trapping each individual prism (hence the name, TrapIt). Read after the break to see how I got on with this highly addictive and exciting iOS game!…

Reader Review: Zinio

iPad selection screen

I’ve found that my iPad has made a fantastic reader. Most days I’ll spend at least an hour or so reading or browsing. I was recently about to renew a local magazine subscription and wondered if there was some way I could get it on my iPad instead. Why not carry all my subscriptions on me rather than having them collect dust on a shelf or under the coffee table?

I didn’t hold much hope of finding any local magazine content online but a search led me to Zinio and their large international range of magazines covering just about every possible subject you can imagine!…

Was the New Zealand iPad 2 launch a success? A spectator’s point of view.

Meanwhile, overseas...

You’ve already heard from Dan and his iPad 2 launch-day experience, so now I thought I’d give you my opinion as an iPad 2-abstainer who got to observe the whole thing from the comfort of iPhonewzealand Towers.

iOS device launches in New Zealand are always far more cloak-and-dagger, and usually far more disappointing than they really need to be. In other countries, launch retailers are usually well publicised, have good amounts of stock, and queuing fans are made to feel welcome and assured that they’re not wasting their time. So why is it so different here, and how did the iPad 2 launch compare to past experiences?…

WWDC San Francisco set for June 6th (7th for NZ) – Rumours say no hardware announcements

The future looks appy

Apple have just sent out invites for this years WWDC (Worldwide Developer Conference) event in San Francisco. The dates to mark on your calendar are June 6th thru 10th (7th thru 11th in NZ time). The invite contains the text “Join us for a preview of the future of iOS and Mac OS X”, the latter of which was largely ignored at last year’s WWDC so Mac devs will be most pleased. Last year’s event saw the unveiling of the iPhone 4 however those hoping for something similar this year may be disappointed as rumours so far seem to be suggesting that no hardware announcements will be made with the focus firmly on software. It’s highly likely that we’ll see a lot more of OS X Lion and quite possible that we’ll learn more about iOS 5, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough. We’ll have all the coverage you need, of course, right here at iPhonewzealand.…

iPad 2 Screen Bleeding, what can you do if it affects you?

Lots of back light bleeding

I’m a few days in to owning my iPad 2 and whilst I am generally pleased with my purchase there is one issue, backlight screen bleeding. This was reported when the iPad 2 came out in the U.S and there have also been reports elsewhere around the world, including some of you here in New Zealand. But is it really an issue and what can you do about it if it affects you? Keep reading to find out.

See this post for the latest update.
