In case you haven’t heard, 3.1 apparently breaks the ability for the iPod Touch as well as 2G and 3G iPhones to connect to corporate Microsoft Exchange servers, leaving the 3GS the only viable model for enterprise in the range. Computerworld predict a pretty grim picture for Apple’s place in the hearts of minds of corporate players, predicting that “Apple has set back its enterprise cause several years, if not permanently.”

Hooray for that!

iTunes 9

- iTunes LP. Clearly trying to stimulate sales of whole albums rather than the current trend of buyers picking and choosing select tracks, Apple have added some pretty interesting new features that come packed with select albums. Animated lyrics, liner notes, videos and photos of the band, full-screen art – it all sounds very promising.

- Home Sharing. Apple have dramatically improved the library sharing function of iTunes. In the past, you could see and play tracks from other libraries over your LAN, but now you can authorise upto five computers on your home network to actually import tracks from one library to another, plus purchase syncing – buy a track on one computer and it instantly appears on the others. Great stuff!

- Genius Mixes. Building on the functionality of the genius playlists introduced in the last major iTunes refresh, Genius Mixes automatically…

Well Apple have released OS 3.1 beta 3 to developers today. A couple of goodies have been found so far but I will keep this post updated as I find out more. Beta 2 devs need to update before midnight tonight as the beta 2 expires then.

You can now send copies of your videos without the compression. Just pick a video, tap and hold for “copy”, switch to email, tap and hold for paste. The size of the email boxes (sender and receiver) will likely still be a limiting factor. (MobileMe allows for 20MB per email, for example).

Another new additon is under Settings > General > Usage. It now shows Tethering Data alongside the previous Cellular Network Data counter.

The release of iPhone OS 3.1 beta 2 has seen tethering via the IPCC workaround no longer working for XT and soon to be 2Degrees customers.Previously in OS 3.0 a workaround allowed you to create a custom carrier bundle to enable tethering, as well as MMS amongst other things, if you were on a non-official carrier i.e XT or 2 Degrees but as of 3.1 beta 2, this no longer works.

Apple have closed the loophole (probably due to AT&T jumping up and down) and at this stage we are unsure of how to open it again. I am sure there will be a way of doing it. There have been some reports saying that if your .ipcc version number is higher than that of the .ipsw then it will be re-enabled. I did a quick test earlier today and this has not worked, however I need to wait until later to ensure all the necessary changes were made.

At this stage all other features work when using the custom carrier bundle so you can continue to use it for everything else. If you absolutely need tethering, when OS 3.1…
