She was specifically interested in the cheaper Wi-Fi only version and asked about the ease and reliability of tethering to her iPhone 4. I’m not sure which option she eventually chose, but I remember grappling with the decision myself before selecting my own iPad 2 and figured that what I’ve learned since may be of help to others.

It has become the industry standard usage app for the iOS. However Bjango has not updated it for sometime and is not natively iPad compatible, which is leading to a clunky and rather utilitarian UI.

However, there is now a new kid on the block. Quota (by SouthFreo) may be new, but it is sleek, sexy and worth a look.

Well TomTom kindly sent me some early so I thought I show you what you need to know about applying one of these to your $200 car kit. Oh and yes I said some (four to be precise) so if you want one early keep reading. All spares have been claimed.
However once all the details emerged and we found out that you couldn’t FaceTime over 3G I was disappointed to say the least and begun to find that FaceTime was more of a gimmick that I could show my mates when they came round the house but not make much use of in everyday life. Well, until FaceTime over 3G officially eventuates I think I have the answer… with a little help from the 2degrees Huawei E5 3G WiFi router. Keep reading to see how you can FaceTime anywhere (without Jailbreaking)…

A couple of days ago Vodafone formally acknowledged the issue in their forums offering an IT Crowd-style “turn it off and back on again” work-around which was less than ideal, but at 5pm yesterday evening an update was posted to advise that a fix had been identified and that it would be rolled out as soon as possible. Providing 12GB (yes, 12!) of data that can last 180 days (6 months) for $150, the plan works out (spread over its maximum duration) as 2GB per month for $25 per month. Not only is that cheap for mobile broadband, it also undercuts the price of traditional ADSL broadband. Telecom, for example, start their ADSL offerings at $41 for 3GB.

It’s amazing what a third competitor in the mobile market has done to data pricing in the last year or so, and it’s great to see continued innovation. We can see this appealing to not just heavy mobile users, but also to lighter home users. Add in the Huawei WiFi router on offer for just $129 and you’ve got an entirely portable wireless broadband network that’s perfect for the likes of WiFi-only iPads and iPod touches.

Unless you have just moved to Earth from outer space you will know that this is Apple’s new video calling service. Compatible FaceTime devices thus far are the iPhone 4, the iPod touch 4th Gen and (as of last week) any Mac with a camera running Snow Leopard.

Aside from the odd launch hiccup and Mac security bug which has now been fixed, we at iPhonewzealand could not be more impressed with FaceTime. The only downside is talking to people with FaceTime uses data, but how much does it use? and what is a call going to cost you to make or receive? Carry on reading to find out.

This is an update to a post we made back in February. Every day we receive lots of emails from people who have bought either a new iPhone 4 or 3GS, or have bought an original iPhone or 3G via Trademe or eBay, and they are confused as to which networks they can use it on, whether it’s unlocked, or whether it can do this-or-that. We’re not surprised, it’s certainly not easy trying to get your head around it all, particularly if you’ve only just started looking and are trying to size the lay of the land. To help you understand the differences between each of the four models, how they work with each of the main three networks here in New Zealand and to help you pick the phone that’s right for you, we’ve updated our comparison guide. Read on to view the guide on-screen or to download a printable PDF.

Although the 3G has now gone, you can now get an iPhone 3GS with just 8GB of storage, in black for $899.
However those “free” calls will only be until the end of August 2010, after which you will have to pay a monthly subscription fee.

Although calling it “free” 3G calling in NZ is a bit if a white lie, cause lets face it with the high cost of data charges here it’s never going to be a free way of making calls. It may however work out to be cheaper to make international calls using 3G.

Data speeds on the iPhone, between Vodafone and XT, are a much discussed topic. There are many different sides of the story and many different reasons behind the results of speed tests. I would suggest that everyone take from this just a view to Ahmad’s experience at the given time in the given location. Some of you may have different experiences and speeds so it would be good to hear your thoughts.

Personally for me the XT speeds, where I use my iPhone, are much faster than that of Vodafone but that is not to say that other areas where you may use it won’t be different.
We’re not surprised, it’s certainly not easy trying to get your head around it all, particularly if you’ve only just started looking and are trying to size the lay of the land. To help you understand the differences between each of the three models, how they work with each of the main three networks here in New Zealand and to help you pick the phone that’s right for you, we’ve put together a handy comparison guide. Hit the ‘Read More’ link to view the guide on-screen or to download a printable PDF.

UPDATE: My bad. There are also price drops for the 3GS in both 16GB and 32GB flavours. The 16GB drops from $599 to $399 on the $80 plan and from $399 to $199 on the $130 plan. The 32GB drops from $799 to $599 and from $599 to $399 respectively. Hit the link for more details. Priced at $94.99, the app is another major GPS app in the same vein as TomTom and Sygic and features maps for both Australia and New Zealand. American and European versions of CoPilot have been out for a wee while with Gizmodo even naming it ‘Best Cheap GPS App’. We will be testing the app on the mean streets of Christchurch today and will report back with a full review either this evening or tomorrow morning, so keep your eyes peeled here is the review. One of them – text-to-speech – is an exciting and major introduction which could give it quite an edge over the competition. But how does it stack up in real-life use?

In case you haven’t heard, 3.1 apparently breaks the ability for the iPod Touch as well as 2G and 3G iPhones to connect to corporate Microsoft Exchange servers, leaving the 3GS the only viable model for enterprise in the range. Computerworld predict a pretty grim picture for Apple’s place in the hearts of minds of corporate players, predicting that “Apple has set back its enterprise cause several years, if not permanently.”

This app needs no introduction and I would suggest that most people have heard of TomTom. They are quite the household name when it comes to Turn-by-Turn navigation and finally the wait is over, from what feels like such a long time ago when it was announced at WWDC in June. Read More

I learned that the hard way when I accidentally wiped the contents of my hard drive last year. That’s where sites like Flickr (with Flickr itself being arguably the best of them) are real life savers in this world of digital photos where hard copies are so rare. But how can the power and convenience of Flickr be harnessed on the iPhone?

A disturbance in the force… like a million voices suddenly cried out in joy, and were suddenly silenced (while they ran speed tests)…

We are hearing anecdotal reports that Vodafone “may” have tweaked their network in the Auckland area today to improve 3G speeds on the 2100Mhz frequency. This could mean a boost in speeds for the iPhone 3G / 3GS, but for now it’s just rumour. We are currently waiting for official word from Vodafone and will post back with an update once we know what’s going on.

UPDATE: 13/08/09 08:25. Vodafone’s external communications manager Paul Brislen has advised that “[our engineers] have been doing something with the software lately, but nothing in particular that should have that kind of impact.” So…. The update is a very minor one which does nothing more than patch an SMS vulnerabity highlighted yesterday. Do not confuse this with 3.1 which is still in beta – tethering for XT remains unaffected by updating to this release so go ahead and download it. Remember to hit ‘Update’ rather than ‘Restore’ to save you the task of having to re-apply our carrier bundle.

To continue development with iPhone SDK 3.0 on your iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS running iPhone OS 3.0.1 will need to perform the following: Click Here

This is pretty big news, considering that the iPhone has only been around for just over two years and that it’s a mobile client. No other mobile clients even make the radar. Not that we’re surprised – the iPhone mail app is by far the best email client I’ve ever used, mobile or desktop. Hit the link to get the full details.

Yesterday, Google announced the release of Latitude for iPhone. For those unfamiliar with this lesser-known Google application, Latitude is a somewhat controversial app that lets you see the real-time location of your Google contacts, provided they have given you permission. The service is limited to use in just five countries right now – but guess what? New Zealand is one of them!

The issue is that some events such as text messages send the number to your iPhone in the international +64 2xxxxxxxx format, but other events such as calls send the numbers to your iPhone in the national 02xxxxxxxxx format. Most phones will see these as the same number, but since 3.0 not the iPhone.Read More

As there are a number of options I have decided to cover them below, giving you some pros and cons for each. Now I know that most people that visit this site will already have an iPhone, but if you already have a 2G or 3G and are moving up to a 3GS and looking around to figure out where to buy, hopefully this will help you out.Read More

Those cold, dark mornings aren’t exactly conducive to getting your arse into gear and getting to work on time, are they? If you’re anything like me you dither around in the morning trying to keep warm and telling yourself “just another minute” before forcing yourself out the door to go to work. And then, as if as punishment from some time-keeping God, you hit traffic. Bad traffic. Or, if you’re bussing, the bus whizzes past you before you get to the bus stop and the next one is 20 minutes away. However with the right tools on board your iPhone, this reality needn’t be yours.
Joking aside, new-comers 2degrees are about to crank the competition dial up to new levels of awesomeness this August when they go live with their brand new network. 2degrees has commited to spending $250 million dollars on building their new network with new cell sites in the main centres and a roaming agreement with Vodafone to get service to customers when they stray outside of those cities. The network will operate both 900 / 1800Mhz 2G and 2100Mhz 3G services making its ability to deal with the iPhone relatively similar to Vodafone’s.Read More

It’s specs match the Jesus phone perfectly, leaving Vodafone’s network support for the device looking shakey at best. So it’s only natural that users have been holding their breaths waiting for Telecom to announce official support for the iPhone, and placing a crucial second offer on the table for would-be or existing iPhone users.
