While standing in the checkout queue of my favourite Apple reseller a few weeks ago, I found myself helping a young lady decide which iPad 2 option was most appropriate for her needs. She was specifically interested in the cheaper Wi-Fi only version and asked about the ease and reliability of tethering to her iPhone 4. I’m not sure which option she eventually chose, but I remember grappling with the decision myself before selecting my own iPad 2 and figured that what I’ve learned since may be of help to others.

Most people have heard of Consume by now, in fact we did a review of it when it first came out. It has become the industry standard usage app for the iOS. However Bjango has not updated it for sometime and is not natively iPad compatible, which is leading to a clunky and rather utilitarian UI.

However, there is now a new kid on the block. Quota (by SouthFreo) may be new, but it is sleek, sexy and worth a look.

When FaceTime was launched I was excited about it, OK we already have Skype for voice and a plethora of other video calling apps, but there was something about FaceTime that seemed different and unique. Vodafone acknowledges 3G issues, fix coming

Last week, we reported on allegations of serious issues with Vodafone’s 3G network, including network drop-outs and failed calls and messaging. A couple of days ago Vodafone formally acknowledged the issue in their forums offering an IT Crowd-style “turn it off and back on again” work-around which was less than ideal, but at 5pm yesterday evening an update was posted to advise that a fix had been identified and that it would be rolled out as soon as possible. 2degrees launches aggressive new long-term mobile broadband plan

2degrees have just announced a new mobile broadband plan, and it’s insanely cheap. Providing 12GB (yes, 12!) of data that can last 180 days (6 months) for $150, the plan works out (spread over its maximum duration) as 2GB per month for $25 per month. Not only is that cheap for mobile broadband, it also undercuts the price of traditional ADSL broadband. Telecom, for example, start their ADSL offerings at $41 for 3GB.

It’s amazing what a third competitor in the mobile market has done to data pricing in the last year or so, and it’s great to see continued innovation. We can see this appealing to not just heavy mobile users, but also to lighter home users. Add in the Huawei WiFi router on offer for just $129 and you’ve got an entirely portable wireless broadband network that’s perfect for the likes of WiFi-only iPads and iPod touches.

2degrees announcement: “A better deal”, “Pay Less, Get More, Lasts Longer” and 3G is here!

iPhone 4 pre-orders have begun in the US and low and behold the iPhone 3G has now gone, not only from the US store though, it would seem they have removed it from all their stores, including NZ.

Although the 3G has now gone, you can now get an iPhone 3GS with just 8GB of storage, in black for $899.

Skype 2.0 brings 3G calling to iPhone…. free until the end of the year [Updated]

Skype 2.0 has finally been released and with it comes free 3G calling. However those “free” calls will only be until the end of August 2010, after which you will have to pay a monthly subscription fee.

Although calling it “free” 3G calling in NZ is a bit if a white lie, cause lets face it with the high cost of data charges here it’s never going to be a free way of making calls. It may however work out to be cheaper to make international calls using 3G.

XT Still Faster in More Dunedin Places for iPhone 3G (March 2010 Update)

iPhonewzealand and Geekzone user Ahmad has repeated his speed tests he did last year in Dunedin using the iPhone on XT and Vodafone.

Data speeds on the iPhone, between Vodafone and XT, are a much discussed topic. There are many different sides of the story and many different reasons behind the results of speed tests. I would suggest that everyone take from this just a view to Ahmad’s experience at the given time in the given location. Some of you may have different experiences and speeds so it would be good to hear your thoughts.

Personally for me the XT speeds, where I use my iPhone, are much faster than that of Vodafone but that is not to say that other areas where you may use it won’t be different.

Vodafone announces iPhone 3G 8GB price drops on certain plans [UPDATED: Includes 3GS]

Vodafone just tweeted a price drop for the iPhone 3G 8GB on their $80 and $130 plans. On a 24-month term the device is now priced at $199 and $0 respectively, down from $399 and $199. Note this is for the 3G (previous generation model) not the 3GS. Still interested? Hit ‘read more’ for the link and then let us know what you think in the comments.

UPDATE: My bad. There are also price drops for the 3GS in both 16GB and 32GB flavours. The 16GB drops from $599 to $399 on the $80 plan and from $399 to $199 on the $130 plan. The 32GB drops from $799 to $599 and from $599 to $399 respectively. Hit the link for more details. (Thanks, Nordy!)

CoPilot Live Australasia now available on the App Store

New Zealand just got a whole new load of GPS navigation love in the shape of CoPilot Australasia [iTunes Link]. Priced at $94.99, the app is another major GPS app in the same vein as TomTom and Sygic and features maps for both Australia and New Zealand. American and European versions of CoPilot have been out for a wee while with Gizmodo even naming it ‘Best Cheap GPS App’. We will be testing the app on the mean streets of Christchurch today and will report back with a full review either this evening or tomorrow morning, so keep your eyes peeled here is the review. Sygic Mobile Maps revisited

Weighing in at around 350MB, it’s a fairly hefty download which introduces a good amount of new features and a number of improvements and fixes. Hard times predicted for iPhone in enterprise

Computerworld have posted an interesting opinion piece about the apparent issue that owners of pre-3GS iPhones are experiencing following the update to OS 3.1. In case you haven’t heard, 3.1 apparently breaks the ability for the iPod Touch as well as 2G and 3G iPhones to connect to corporate Microsoft Exchange servers, leaving the 3GS the only viable model for enterprise in the range. Computerworld predict a pretty grim picture for Apple’s place in the hearts of minds of corporate players, predicting that “Apple has set back its enterprise cause several years, if not permanently.”

Did you feel that? A disturbance in the force… like a million voices suddenly cried out in joy, and were suddenly silenced (while they ran speed tests)…

We are hearing anecdotal reports that Vodafone “may” have tweaked their network in the Auckland area today to improve 3G speeds on the 2100Mhz frequency. This could mean a boost in speeds for the iPhone 3G / 3GS, but for now it’s just rumour. We are currently waiting for official word from Vodafone and will post back with an update once we know what’s going on.

UPDATE: 13/08/09 08:25. Vodafone’s external communications manager Paul Brislen has advised that “[our engineers] have been doing something with the software lately, but nothing in particular that should have that kind of impact.” So…. Overactive imaginations? Coincidence? Conspiracy? Now we don’t know *what* to think, but keep us updated in the comments with your experiences.

iPhone email client outranks GMail

According to campaignmonitor.com, the iPhone now commands a 5.78% marketshare of all email clients, outstripping even GMail. This is pretty big news, considering that the iPhone has only been around for just over two years and that it’s a mobile client. No other mobile clients even make the radar.
