Announcement: iPhonewzealand is closing

iPhonewzealand home screen

With heavy hearts, the time has come for us to announce that we’re going to be closing iPhonewzealand as at 20th February, 2012. With some help from contributors along the way, we (Dan and Steve) have run the site with every ounce of the spare time that we have been able to sacrifice outside of our normal jobs and family lives. At times this has been quite gruelling, especially around the launch of new devices, so it’s fair to say that this action is also due to a desire to free up some of that precious time.

We’ve been operating since July 2009, back when the device was relatively new and had official support with only one mobile operator in New Zealand, so there was a need for a site like ours to help people get connected on other networks. Dan’s legendary carrier bundles made it possible for people to get going on the network of their choice quickly and easily.

We also helped spread the word about local apps and developers, keeping the ever-growing kiwi user-base up-to-date with news and reviews as an explosion of ‘big name’ kiwi apps such as TradeMe, Stuff and TVNZ hit the App Store.

As of now, new registrations to the site are closed. The site will continue to be here for a while, but with no further updates after this post. If you need to, you can get hold of us via the ‘Contact Us’ link until the site is taken down (in the event that it is not sold), or via our Twitter presence, @iphonewzealand, which will remain open (but mostly inactive) for a period of time.

We welcome any expressions of interest into buying the site or offers from anybody who might like to shower us with cash so that we can do this for a living — please feel free to get in touch with us via the ‘contact us’ button on the header of the site.

Steve Jobs once said that he just wanted to “put a ding in the universe”. That goes for us too, and we hope that on a much tinier scale we managed to do that.

All the best

Steve and Dan…

Today’s iPhone 4S announcement and what it means for New Zealand

Launching November 11

After all the hype and the months of insufferable wild speculation, it pains me to say that if today’s announcement could be summed up in a word it would be: yawn. This will certainly go down in history as one of the least exciting iPhone keynotes (in my opinion at least), but for New Zealand in particular there is even less to be excited about. Why? Reminder: Tomorrow is iPhone announcement day. Give us your predictions!

What will it be?

No doubt about it, the past few months have been ridiculous in terms of rumour and speculation surrounding the next generation iPhone. Thankfully, we don’t have to put up with it much longer because tomorrow morning at 6am NZT Apple will be unveiling the real thing on home turf in Cupertino, California. Unfortunately, it won’t be possible for us to live blog the event this time but all the usual iPhone blogs such as TUAW, 9to5Mac, The Loop and This is my next will be, so if you’re getting up early head to your site of choice and get ready to refresh like you’ve never refreshed before. We’ll provide a wrap-up later in the day with any New Zealand-specific news, should any materialise.

Will we see a slightly tweaked iPhone 4 revealed as the iPhone 4S? Or will the tear-drop shaped iPhone 5 debut? Maybe 2degrees or Telecom will become official carriers, or Vodafone will actually hold a launch party? Share your thoughts in the comments!…

Apple to hold iPhone event October 4th (US time)

Yeah, let's.

Finally, after months of rumour, we have a date! As reported by The Loop, Apple has begun sending out media invites for an iPhone event to be held at the company’s Cupertino headquarters on October 4th (October 5th in NZ). The invite specifically says “Let’s Talk iPhone” so there seems little doubt that next generation of the device will be unveiled. Other than that, details remain under wraps as per usual. So, what are your predictions? iPhone 4S? iPhone 5? Both? Hit the comments!…

iOS 5 announced: new feature round-up

Best update ever? Maybe.

Steve Jobs’s WWDC Keynote has wrapped up and I have to say that this is probably the most exciting and feature-packed non-hardware keynote I’ve ever seen him do. There are some incredible new features being packed into iOS 5 that will really wipe the smug smile from any face that might have been claiming that iOS was getting stale and falling behind the competition. After the break we’ll have a quick round-up of what’s new so read on.…

iOS 5, iCloud and OS X Lion confirmed for WWDC

It's nearly time

In a somewhat unusual move for Apple, the company have issued a press release this morning confirming ahead of time that Steve Jobs (yes, Steve Jobs!) will be unveiling not only Mac OS X Lion but also iOS 5 and the widely-rumoured iCloud which the press release calls “Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering” at Tuesday’s WWDC event. That’s a lot of reveals for one day but there could still be some surprises for the day… iPhone 4S, anybody? Keep reading for the full press release from Cupertino.

It’s on: iPad 2 event confirmed for March 2nd (3rd for NZ)

Not so cryptic

Apple have begun sending out invites for an event scheduled for March 2nd, and here’s a copy of the one received by Engadget. The graphic on the invite features a Calendar app icon where the focus is clearly on the number ’2′, and a peel-away in the corner reveals an iPad. The text on the graphic reads ‘Come see what 2011 will be the year of’, obviously referring to the fact that 2010 was quite widely accepted as the year of the iPad (1) as far as tech goes. My only hope is that the convention of renaming the device year-upon-year as has happened with the iPhone doesn’t happen with the iPad and that it remains as simply ’iPad’, as is the case for almost all other Apple products. Actually, who am I kidding: my real only hope is that our invitation is in the post!

PS: We’re still not back in full swing, but as I’m lead here not sleeping (again) I simply couldn’t ignore posting this. Stay strong, Canterbury.

Telecom Voicemail Viewer launching today: Next best thing to Visual Voicemail?

The screen most of have never seen: Visual Voicemail.

It may not be actual Visual Voicemail, but this could be the next best thing to it in New Zealand. Telecom are launching a new Voicemail service this morning called Voicemail Viewer whereby when a voicemail is left for you a SMS is sent detailing who called, when they called, the length of the message, and — here’s the killer bit — a number to dial to access that specific message, bypassing any others that might be waiting. No more having to wade through other messages and inane voice prompts to get to that critical message from someone you actually care about. New postpaid customers joining XT from today will automatically get the service, existing customers can opt-in by calling 123 from 10am this morning or wait until February when mass migration will begin. Keep reading for the press release.…

Apple about to make ‘exciting announcement’ about iTunes (Update: It’s The Beatles)

What is this?

Well this is exciting… Apple just updated the splash screen of their website to the above graphic. We have no idea what it means, but at 4am tomorrow morning all will be revealed. Want to place bets on what’s in store? iTunes subscriptions or streaming from the cloud seem the only obvious possibilities but hit us up in the comments if you have any other bright ideas.

UPDATE: The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the announcement will be the Beatles catalogue being added to iTunes, which has been part of a legal battle between Apple and the Fab Four ever since iTunes was launched. Not particularly exciting to us, but we can see how Mr Jobs and co would consider this a milestone.

UPDATE 17/11/10: Yup, it’s The Beatles. ‘Nuff said, but you can now find them right here on iTunes.…

White iPhone 4 delayed until 2011

Delayed again

If you’re waiting for the white iPhone 4, it might just be time to reconsider how long you’re prepared to wait. Originally slated to go on sale at the same time as the black model and then delayed several times due to unconfirmed reasons, Reuters are now reporting that Apple have ruled out a release prior to Spring ’11 (Autumn ’11 in the southern hemisphere). An Apple spokesperson is quoted with an apology for disappointed customers, so it sounds like they have their facts straight. Are you waiting? What do you plan to do now? Hit us up in the comments.…

Roundup: Apple’s Back to the Mac event brings iOS and OS X closer together

OS X Lion

We weren’t going to post about Apple’s Back to the Mac event, assuming it would be irrelevant to iOS devices… we were wrong! Like never before, Apple are converging their two platforms to bring the user experiences and capabilities closer together. FaceTime for Mac launches today in beta form (yay!), iLife ’11 goes on sale today with a new version of iPhoto that very closely resembles the Photos app on iPad, and an App Store for Mac with the same one-click-install and home screen icons as iOS is coming within the next 90 days. Keep reading for the details.…

Apple aware of NZ’s alarm clock plight, software update on the way

The end is nigh

For those of you still frustrated with the alarm clock situation, don’t panic. We already know that iOS 4.2 will fix the issue when it lands in November, but today we received word from an Apple spokesperson that they’re aware of the situation and that a software update is forthcoming. Unfortunately, however, they couldn’t confirm whether this software update was iOS 4.2 itself or an interim bug-fix update for 4.1. New confusion arose when the issue appeared to have fixed itself over the weekend, but then mysteriously stopped working again this morning. It’s great to know that Apple are aware of the situation and are open to talking to us about it, but let’s hope this gets fixed sooner rather than later as changing time zones in Time Zone Support isn’t ideal.…

2degrees logo

2degrees has announced its latest weapon in the battle for hearts, minds and wallets: a pay-monthly plan that requires no minimum-term contract and allows users to roll-over any unused minutes to the following month, making it the first in New Zealand to offer such a plan.
