Since the 13th October 2009 any Telecom XT prepaid mobile customer that topped up would receive an additional bonus credit depending on how much you topped up. That bonus credit equated to around 33% of the top-up value and really made a difference to your balance, especially if you topped up with $60 and got $80. For the love of God, don’t use your iPhone on Air New Zealand’s new Airbus flights

According to a story in The Herald today, Vodafone and Air New Zealand have announced a new service which will allow passengers on domestic flights using the new black Airbus A320′s to use their mobile phones on-board, in-flight. Despite the ‘free’ minute allocation they include, the average price per minute still makes voice calling a costly exercise. FaceTime, FaceTime, FaceTime! Unless you have just moved to Earth from outer space you will know that this is Apple’s new video calling service. Compatible FaceTime devices thus far are the iPhone 4, the iPod touch 4th Gen and (as of last week) any Mac with a camera running Snow Leopard.

Aside from the odd launch hiccup and Mac security bug which has now been fixed, we at iPhonewzealand could not be more impressed with FaceTime. The only downside is talking to people with FaceTime uses data, but how much does it use? and what is a call going to cost you to make or receive? Carry on reading to find out.

You may remember back in August we let you know that when purchasing a Prepaid XT MicroSIM for $29.95 you would get $29.95 worth of data included (XT’s 500MB data plan). Well it would seem that offer is still going but it ends at the end of October (31st to be precise). Maybe this offer is to get people to move across to XT by then, but as a bonus Telecom are running a mobile data promotion until 31st October which will give you an extra 1GB of data, meaning you’ll have 1.5GB to play with. 2degrees announces 50MB data bundle and $10 text

Until now, 2degrees’ mobile offering has been somewhat of a cruel mistress for iPhone users – attractive calling rates, but expensive data caps (50c per MB) and 2G speeds. Well, something had to change and this afternoon, one of these issues has been addressed in an announcement made by the company via a press event in Auckland. Available immediately are two new optional packages – a 50MB data plan and a $10 text bundle. Yes folks, 2degrees finally just became a serious option for iPhone users – but does it stack up against the other players?

2degrees poised to make mobile data statement

2degrees Mobile have been in touch today to let us know they are going to be holding a ‘press event’ tomorrow at midday at 4pm today. It is to be held at their head office in Auckland and they will be making a statement regarding “mobile data”. All we know at this stage is that it is not related to the launch of their 3G network, which is scheduled for later this year.

We can only speculate as to what will be announced – perhaps plans or cheaper casual rates but as soon as the press release is available we’ll post the details here.
