Christchurch company churns out eight apps as part of experimental project

The Dominion Post have posted a story on stuff.co.nz today about Jade Software, a Christchurch-based programming house, that has produced eight iPhone apps (so far) as part of an experimental project designed to “take [employees] outside of their comfort zone”. iPhone reality show underway – identity of kiwi developer revealed

Yeeeeeee-haaaa!

A couple of weeks ago, we told you about an upcoming reality ‘TV’ show revolving around the development of an iPhone app and that a kiwi developer would be among the ‘cast’. Well, the show is underway however it seems to be a somewhat low-budget live-streaming affair. The kiwi developer involved is Peter Watling of Orsome (creators of TVGuide / Metroinfo etc) and you can watch the show live from Italy by hitting ‘read more’ and clicking the link.

Spotlight on local devs: Reuben Bijl of Smudge Apps

Next up in our Spotlight series we’re turning our attention to Christchurch-based developers Smudge Apps. As we all know, New Zealand has some pretty talented developers and Reuben Bijl and Toby Vincent are no exception. They have created a myriad of their own apps under the company but are now moving (and very successfully) into the world of developing for third parties.

Although they had already released a number of apps Smudge first got our attention when Yellow was released, the extremely successful app for Yellow Pages.  It became a number one hit on the App Store very quickly but they didn’t rest there. Hot on the heels of Yellow came Flicks, a movie timetable app, and Smudge Apps cemented their place as serious iPhone developers in New Zealand.

But who are Reuben Bijl and Toby Vincent and where do they come from? What were the drivers for developing for iPhone and what are their plans going forward? I sat down with Reuben over a coffee to find out more…

Kiwi app developer to feature in iPhone reality TV show

Complete with geek horses?

A well-known member of the iPhone dev community here in New Zealand has been selected to take part in a reality TV show. Filmed in Italy and the brainchild of Atlanta-based Big Nerd Ranch, ten iPhone developers from all around the world will be put together to create a new social networking app which will then be made available on the App Store for free. The name of the developer can’t be made public until December 5th, but rest assured we will cover the event right here on iPhonewzealand. Read on for more details in the press release.
