iPhone alarm now working again as predicted

Hallelujah... again

For those of you blighted by the iPhone’s second alarm failure, you can breathe a sigh of relief… for now. I just tried a non-repeating alarm and as per the predictions from 9to5 Mac, this is now working again. What made the alarm fail for the first two days of the year is somewhat of a mystery right now, but we’ve contacted Apple for comment and will let you know if we receive a response. Interestingly, this doesn’t seem to be restricted to just the iPhone: I set my iMac to boot-up at 6am every morning via System Preferences, however this didn’t work on the 1st or 2nd either, but did today so it would seem that this glitch goes deeper than just iOS.

One thing is for certain: Apple need to sort this out. It’s astounding to me that with all the innovation and powerful, game-changing features built into iOS, the real core features of a smartphone such as alarms and calendar entries continue to either evade Cupertino’s mastery or appear to be unimportant to them. Bugs that cause alarms to go off early or not at all and birthdays to appear a day late in calendars are all things that, given the maturity of iOS, need to be stamped out right now.…

Vodafone acknowledges 3G issues, fix coming

Have you turned it off and on again?

Last week, we reported on allegations of serious issues with Vodafone’s 3G network, including network drop-outs and failed calls and messaging. A couple of days ago Vodafone formally acknowledged the issue in their forums offering an IT Crowd-style “turn it off and back on again” work-around which was less than ideal, but at 5pm yesterday evening an update was posted to advise that a fix had been identified and that it would be rolled out as soon as possible. Read on for Vodafone’s announcement and post your reactions.…

Are you experiencing data, text or voice issues on your iPhone’s Vodafone connection?

Network issues?

The team at iPhonewzealand use Telecom XT for our iPhones, so this has gone under the radar for us until now, but a can of worms has been opened for Vodafone over at Geekzone. Site moderator sbiddle opened a thread in which he described the issues he is currently experiencing with data sessions on his Nokia E71 stalling, SMS messages neither being delivered nor received and voice calls going straight to voicemail. According to his posts and blog, Vodafone CSRs refused to accept that this was a real issue, so sbiddle turned to Geekzone to see if anybody else was experiencing the same issues. Boy did the floodgates open……

Apple aware of NZ’s alarm clock plight, software update on the way

The end is nigh

For those of you still frustrated with the alarm clock situation, don’t panic. We already know that iOS 4.2 will fix the issue when it lands in November, but today we received word from an Apple spokesperson that they’re aware of the situation and that a software update is forthcoming. Unfortunately, however, they couldn’t confirm whether this software update was iOS 4.2 itself or an interim bug-fix update for 4.1. New confusion arose when the issue appeared to have fixed itself over the weekend, but then mysteriously stopped working again this morning. It’s great to know that Apple are aware of the situation and are open to talking to us about it, but let’s hope this gets fixed sooner rather than later as changing time zones in Time Zone Support isn’t ideal.…

Alarm clock glitch fixed in iOS 4.2 beta 2

Alarm clock fixed!

If your body clock is still reeling from this week’s unwelcome surprise, you’ll be as glad as I was to learn that the issue is fixed in iOS 4.2 beta 2 which hit the internets just hours ago. The final release isn’t set to go live until November, so you’ll need to get creative in the meantime but it’s good to know that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.…

iPhone alarm borked by daylight savings?

The end is nigh

I am tired and I am grumpy. And it’s my iPhone’s fault! Yes, folks, as if losing an hour’s sleep due to daylight savings isn’t bad enough, how about losing another hour just for good measure? It seems that Apple have borked something with the alarm clock and despite the clock on my iPhone being correctly set, the alarm I had scheduled for 5:55am went off at 4:55am this morning, which is basically 3:55am until my body clock adjusts. Unfortunately my tired brain didn’t spot the critical flaw in the Matrix and now I’m seriously hacked off. But the plot thickens upon further investigation……

FaceTime issues resolved

First, there was doom and gloom. Then, there was a glimmer of light, and now the darkness is all but gone. No, I’m not talking about Lord of the Rings, but the wait has certainly been just as epic: ported numbers will now work with FaceTime on Vodafone.…

The iPhone 4 antenna problem: round-up and what you can do about it

Network issues?

If you’ve been cruising the interwebs over the past couple of days, you can’t have missed the plethora of stories, some factual and some not-so-much, about the problem with the iPhone 4′s antenna. In a nutshell: the stainless-steel rim of the iPhone 4 is actually two antennae. The two antennae are separated via notches in the rim, one of which (on the lower-left of the phone) is positioned where many people (particularly lefties) ‘bridge’ the notch with their fingers or palm. This ‘flesh-bridge’, if you’ll forgive the term, connects the two antennae and causes loss of signal. So what can be done about it? Read on.

Music Top Ten in iPhone NZ iTunes Store goes AWOL

Missing in action: NZ Top Ten

The music “Top Tens” section of the iPhone iTunes store in New Zealand has been missing in action since the release of iPhone OS 3.1. Top tens remain in place for other sections such as ringtones and podcasts, but the music section now only supports “new releases” and “genres” making the store far less useful than before.…
