After all the announcements on Tuesday Apple posted information regarding iOS 4.3 and there is some bad news for those of you still using an iPhone 3G.

One of our Apple sources has just informed us that it looks like Apple has finalized the code for its upcoming iOS 4.3 release. The build, we’re told, is 8F190 for those keeping track. Maybe we’ll see this release unify the Verizon iPhone OS-wise as well? We’ll probably see this in the wild next week if we had to bet…

iOS 4.3 Personal Hotspot… is it any good?

As you may or may not have read, iOS 4.3 comes with a new feature called “Personal Hotspot” which, simply put, creates a personal wi-fi hotspot for you to use anywhere you have your iPhone. It also replaces/updates the Tethering option. ‘Tethering” is no longer available per se, instead it now all comes under the one umbrella.

The question is, is it any good? The short answer is “Yes”, medium answer, “Yes, it is awesome” but keep reading for the long version, my reasons why and the downlow on what you need to do to get it working.

iOS 4.3 beta 3 available now

Apple’s 3rd update in just about as many weeks to their latest beta iOS (iOS beta 4.3) has just dropped and is ready for download (if your are a dev). What changes does it bring? At this stage we are unsure but once it’s down and installed we’ll be sure to update you. Hopefully Skype now works (unlikely though).

The update is available for all devices running iOS betas including iPhone (3GS/4), iPad, iPod touch (3rd/4th gen) and Apple TV.

Update 1: The first of the changes has come in (although it’s a 4.3 thing not a beta 3 thing): You can now cancel app downloads midway through [via AppAdvice]. See below for details.

Update 2: Skype STILL doesn’t work… guess we’ll need to see an update to Skype before that happens.

Update 3: Not sure if this came in beta 3 (it may have been beta 2) but you can finally play direct from your iPhone camera roll onto the Apple TV. You may remember we commented about the lack of this back in our review of the Apple TV.. and although a little buggy (occasionally quits back to the Apple TV main menu) at least it is now here and I am sure by the time 4.3 is public it will work perfectly. iOS 4.3 beta 2 available, Apple confirm iPad gestures only for devs

The latest iOS beta, iOS 4.3 beta 2, has just been dropped to devs and is available now for download for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and the Apple TV.

Interestingly in the release notes [below] Apple have confirmed that the gestures are not going to be available to the general public and are only going to be available to developers in the betas.

TIP: Enable iOS AirPrint for ALL networked printers in Mac OS X… and then some

For no apparent reason, Apple pulled the support for the highly anticipated (and hyped) iOS feature AirPrint in the final build of Mac OS X 10.6.5. The feature was set to allow any iOS device running 4.2 to print wirelessly to any networked printer on a Mac running 10.6.5. Consequently, the only printers you can print to are a handful of (natively enabled) HP printers. For anybody interested the list of those HP printers can be found here.

For the rest of us who are not willing to buy a new printer just for this feature we are going to take a look at a pretty much 1-click solution to enable AirPrint on ALL networked printers… and a little more. Carry on reading for the full run-down.

iOS 4.1 now available for Apple TV

Well here you go everyone… hot off the heels of iOS 4.2.1 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch the Apple TV just got it’s update to 4.1.

We know the 4.1 update will bring AirPlay video across your iDevices, but are yet to find out more. You can download it direct to the device through the Apple TV update or download it directly here and update via iTunes. Hit the comments once you’ve updated.

Finally! iOS 4.2 is now available for your device. For iPhone and iPod touch owners it’s an evolutionary step with new features such as AirPrint and AirPlay, but for iPad owners it’s a revolutionary leap and bound with multitasking, unified inbox and all the other goodies that iPhone owners have been showing off for months. iOS 4.2.1 Gold Master seeded to developers… What the…?

Well what have we here… iOS 4.2.1 Gold Master. Yup that’s not a typo you see before you, apple have released iOS GM 4.2.1 to devs for all versions of iOS.

We are obviously getting closer and closer to the public release of 4.2 but what the dot one is fixing we are unsure… we’d say it’s pretty minor though for Apple to go straight to GM with it.

Revised iOS 4.2 GM released, fixes iPad WiFi issues

Hot off the heals of the iTunes 10.1 release, which adds supports for the upcoming iOS 4.2 upgrade, Apple have released a revision of the iOS 4.2 Grand Master (GM). Supposedly, this is to fix issues with WiFi on the iPad, which delayed the official launch of iOS 4.2 to the general public.

Assuming there are no additional issues with the GM, we should see a public release sometime next week.

iTunes 10.1 released, support for AirPlay and iOS 4.2 included

Earlier this morning, Apple released the new version of their iTunes software, which now boasts the ability to sync with the new iOS 4.2 due out very soon. Support has also been added for the promised ‘AirPlay’ feature which allows owners of the new Apple TV to stream media from their iTunes library to their TV.

A Mac Rumors report suggests that iOS 4.2 may not come until next week, however this iTunes upgrade is a sure sign it’s on its way.

AirPrint now restricted to ‘AirPrint-enabled’ printers only? (updated)

One of the key new features of iOS 4.2 is undoubtedly AirPrint – a neat feature that allows you to print from your iPhone and / or iPad. At the iOS 4.2 keynote, it was announced that AirPrint would work with any printer shared on your wireless LAN via Bonjour, or with any printer that had native support for the new AirPrint standard. It now seems that those of us in the first boat with shared printers have had the rug pulled from under us, and the service is now limited to just specific AirPrint printers… all from HP. Tomorrow’s Apple event: Your predictions please [UPDATE: Event to be live-streamed]

In case you’ve been living under an Apple-proof rock for the last fortnight then you’ll already know that an Apple event is taking place Sept 1st – that’s tomorrow (02/09) 5am NZ time. This time of year is traditionally when Cupertino unveil refreshed iPods, and from the graphic it’s clear that music is at the heart of the event. An updated iPod touch with front-facing camera and FaceTime is almost a certainty, but there are rumours (as usual) that the event could also be used to announce a slew of other goodies including an all-new Apple TV (iTV), cloud-based iTunes, TV show rentals (for the US), iOS 4 for the iPad, and the release date for the white iPhone 4. We want your predictions, so hit the comments and put your stake in the sand!

UPDATE: Apple have just announced that for the first time they will be live streaming the event on the Apple website. So if any of you are going to be up at 5am and were planning on a date with the refresh button, great news! – You can now sit back and watch the whole thing live. Go get it folks! iOS 4 is available now from an iTunes 9.2 near you.

If you haven’t got it already then go download iTunes 9.2 and run a manual backup (right click on your iPhone/iPod touch in iTunes, hit backup). You may also want to manually back up any images if you plan on doing a restore (which we recommend).

Don’t forget our bundles don’t work with iOS 4 but you can manually set the settings by visiting this link from your iPhone or check our manual setting page here.

iBooks about to drop for iPhone?

We’re hearing reports of iBooks rearing its head on iPhones running iOS 4 — in fact our very own Paul has received the above pop-up today when logging in with his UK iTunes account, however hitting ‘download’ resulted in an error for him. Hidden keyboard gem in iOS 4

As you may or may not know, up to and including iPhone firmware 3.1.3 there has been a keyboard shortcut for adding .org, .edu and .net by pressing and holding the .com button. Unfortunately there has never been an option for foreign site extensions, such as .co.nz. Well here’s some good news and may I say something that has been a long time coming.

After installing OS 4 beta 4 and having a look around I noticed Apple has added a number of new wallpapers for users to choose from, all of which are relatively clean so as not to distract from your app icons. I thought I would grab the new wallpapers and post them up in case anyone wants to install them on their pre-OS4 device.

To install them select your favourite and tap and hold to save it to your device. From there you can set it as your wallpaper.

Heads-up: Our bundles don’t work on iPhone iOS 4… yet

This is a heads-up to let you all know that our carrier bundles don’t work with iPhone OS 4 right now. To be super-clear: iPhone OS 4 isn’t out yet, but a beta (preview) version of it is out for registered Apple developers. We haven’t had the chance to install it ourselves yet but reader simonwhite has and unfortunately he has advised that the carrier bundles don’t work with it. So: if you need our carrier bundles working, do not install the preview of OS 4 yet.

We’re updating our iPhones today and needless to say, it looks like we have a few coffee-fuelled nights ahead of us to get this thing working again but the good news is the public release of this is at least a few months away (probably July if previous years are anything to go by). We’ll keep you posted on progress, but bear in mind that until the final release is out we still won’t know for sure if we’ve done it. Until then: continue to enjoy OS 3.1.3 with fully-working bundles!Read More
