iOS 5 available now…Go Go Go!!

Finally the day has come… iOS 5 is available for the general population to download. The update is available now via iTunes for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 3rd and 4th gen, iPad, iPad 2, and Apple TV 2.

There’s a whole raft of new features (over 200 of them), too many for us to go through, but below is a list of the main ones (via Apple). We thought we’d leave it up to you guys to tell us what you think, what you’ve found, what you like and what you dislike. So hit the comments below and let us know what you think of the new features and what’s your favourite.

Facebook for iPad available now

Yes that’s right folks, Facebook have finally released their app for the iPad and it’s available at the link below. They have also issued an update to the iPhone app and from our initial look at it, it’s a pretty nice update with a whole new interface. Hit the download link below (it’s universal) and get your ‘Like’ on.

App Review: MetroView NZ City GPS Navigation

iPad 2 – Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + 3G?

While standing in the checkout queue of my favourite Apple reseller a few weeks ago, I found myself helping a young lady decide which iPad 2 option was most appropriate for her needs. She was specifically interested in the cheaper Wi-Fi only version and asked about the ease and reliability of tethering to her iPhone 4. I’m not sure which option she eventually chose, but I remember grappling with the decision myself before selecting my own iPad 2 and figured that what I’ve learned since may be of help to others.

A few weeks ago I reviewed the new iteration of the official Trademe app. As you may recall, I gave it very good marks overall, but did cite some missing features. One of the features that went unmentioned was the ability to combine multiple photos and upload them to your account. So unless you could use Photoshop you were in for multiple picture fees.

However, stress not! There is an app for that, at least there will be soon, thanks to Chewy Applications. Let’s take an exclusive look at TradeKiwi which will hit the marketplace soon.

Slightly later than the usual 2 week beta cycle, Apple just a few minutes ago released iOS 5 beta 2 to developers. Despite rumors, this is a regular download and not the first over the air software update some were expecting. We are downloading this at the moment and will of course bring you anything new and noteworthy. I originally bought my iPad 2 to play with, but I thought wouldn’t it be great if I could use it for University (at least then it’d be a whole lot easier to justify) so I embarked on an app spending spree to find the right ones. I decided to write an introduction to the ones I use from a practicality point of view. She is of an age where she can’t spell yet, but enjoys sounds, animals and sparkly things on the screen. In fact this is the first app I have reviewed where I have used her to play with it and it’s been great fun watching her reaction. As I say she can’t spell yet but with a little help from her Dad she was soon clapping when the app sparkled telling her we had the letter in the right place. iPad 2 available now at Apple Online Store… long delays ensue

So after a long wait the iPad 2 is now available from the Apple Online Store. At 2:30am the store refreshed where a number of you were hanging out ready to make your purchase and it seems most of you did.

When the store came up there was a 2-3 week wait for delivery. That’s a long delay! Clearly if you didn’t get one online you’ll want to be early to a store tomorrow. If you’re heading down to a store don’t forget to send your pics to us at team@iphonewzealand.co.nz

Although the iPad 2 is launching in two days, Apple wants to make sure that you’re filled with knowledge for March 11th. Sure, we showed you pretty much everything you wanted to know about the company’s second slate, but if you want more, they’ve got you covered. FTW: Apple confirms $100 refund for original iPad

Much like the company did when it suddenly dropped the price of its original iPhone, Apple is giving $100 back to those who purchased an iPad up to a fortnight before the March 2nd unveiling of the iPad 2. If our math is correct, that makes February 16th the cutoff date, and it’s being reported that those in the US will see $100 placed back on their credit card, while those overseas will get £100 / €100 back in their pocket. If you’ve suddenly found yourself in this pool, you’ll need to head back to a brick-and-mortar location with your receipt to get the refund processed, or if you ordered online, you’ll need to call Apple’s 1-800 number and use your smoothest late-night voice when asking nicely for your Benjamin back. Godspeed.

I am based in the UK, but previously lived in Seattle (hence the username). I, much like Dan, am hooked on Apple and keep my ear to the ground for the latest news. It’s on: iPad 2 event confirmed for March 2nd (3rd for NZ)

Apple have begun sending out invites for an event scheduled for March 2nd, and here’s a copy of the one received by Engadget. The graphic on the invite features a Calendar app icon where the focus is clearly on the number ’2′, and a peel-away in the corner reveals an iPad. The text on the graphic reads ‘Come see what 2011 will be the year of’, obviously referring to the fact that 2010 was quite widely accepted as the year of the iPad (1) as far as tech goes. My only hope is that the convention of renaming the device year-upon-year as has happened with the iPhone doesn’t happen with the iPad and that it remains as simply ’iPad’, as is the case for almost all other Apple products. Actually, who am I kidding: my real only hope is that our invitation is in the post!

PS: We’re still not back in full swing, but as I’m lead here not sleeping (again) I simply couldn’t ignore posting this. Stay strong, Canterbury.

iPad as sole means of mobile communication: is it possible?

A question I get asked a lot and I’m sure some of you will have been asked, too, is “why do you need an iPhone and an iPad?” The honest answer (although rarely admitted) is you don’t need both… you just want them both.

Recently I have been considering saying goodbye to my iPhone 4 and once released later this year using a 64gb WiFi 3G iPad 2 as my sole means of communication. No this is not an early April fools’ and yes, you did read that correctly: goodbye, iPhone 4.

I realise the stage I have chosen to propose ditching the iPhone 4 on could have been better. Proposing this to iPhone enthusiasts on an iPhone blog isn’t going to be an easy sell but before you judge me and shout blasphemy carry on reading to find out why.

Opera mini coming to iPad, cool if 3rd party browsers float your boat

If third party browsers float your boat then you’ll be pleased to hear that Opera have announced that their highly successful mobile browser, Opera Mini, will be coming to iPad. In the press release they confirmed that they’ll be bringing it to multiple platforms saying “At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, new versions of the Opera Mini browser on Android, iPhone, J2ME, BlackBerry, Symbian and even the iPad will appear.” As of yet there is no date, they will only be showing them at MWC.

I’ve often wondered how well 3rd party browsers sell for iOS. Keep reading to find out more and my thoughts on 3rd party browsers.

Kiwi App Review: Domino’s Pizza app emerges fresh from the oven

Mmmmm, pizza! There’s nothing quite like it to slay a raging hunger, and there’s nothing more convenient than ordering it from home and having it delivered to your door. Until now, trying to place such an order on an iPhone or iPad has been a frustrating experience due mainly to an unhealthy reliance on Adobe Flash. Pizza Hut’s website is built entirely on Flash and visiting it from an iPhone or iPad results in nothing but a blank screen – not even a courtesy ‘Sorry, we do not currently support your device’ message. Domino’s Pizza’s website does have an HTML version of their online ordering service, however it’s clunky and slow. Luckily the company have just launched their iPhone ordering app here in NZ, so if you’re hungry to learn more stick with me and we’ll take a look.Read More

Chopper 2 Wireless controller now available

So if you’ve got Chopper 2 on your iPhone, iPad, and or Mac then you’ll know by now how cool the game is. You’ll also know that you can control the game that’s installed on your iPad or Mac with your iPhone by using the built in ‘Remote’ option.

Well now you can get a stand alone app to contol the game from your iPhone or iPad on your Mac. This is great for two reasons. Firstly if you have bought it for your Mac don’t really fancy shelling out for another copy for your iOS device (cheapskate) then you can install the remote for free. Secondly you now don’t have to go through the game interface to control your chopper on your Mac or other device. You just fire up the wireless controller app and you are away.

Parliamentary Services finally trialling access to iPhones and iPads

A geek on holiday: Spotting jailbroken iPads in Queenstown

Yes, Dan is currently spending some well-earned time down on Lake Wakatipu but, always on duty, he just had to get in touch with iPhonewzealand HQ when he found that the demo unit in the local branch of Dick Smith was jailbroken, bold as brass and brazen as you like! TIP: Enable iOS AirPrint for ALL networked printers in Mac OS X… and then some

For no apparent reason, Apple pulled the support for the highly anticipated (and hyped) iOS feature AirPrint in the final build of Mac OS X 10.6.5. The feature was set to allow any iOS device running 4.2 to print wirelessly to any networked printer on a Mac running 10.6.5. Consequently, the only printers you can print to are a handful of (natively enabled) HP printers. For anybody interested the list of those HP printers can be found here.

For the rest of us who are not willing to buy a new printer just for this feature we are going to take a look at a pretty much 1-click solution to enable AirPrint on ALL networked printers… and a little more. Carry on reading for the full run-down.

When I got my iPad one of the first things I did, and I am sure you did as well, is look at what accessories I was going to buy. On the list were a Case, the Camera Connection Kit and some kind of stand or dock. I have always struggled with whether I wanted a dock / stand as I was never really sure what I wanted and what I wanted it to do. So when Apple offered to send us the iPad Keyboard Dock for review I jumped at the chance to see if it would meet my requirements. iTunes 10.1 beta and iOS 4.2 beta 2 now available – APN editing is back!

With fingers crossed that it sorts out more than a few critical bugs found in beta 1, we are happy to say that beta 2 of iOS 4.2 is now available to developers. Also available is iTunes 10.1 beta which now supports printing from your iOS app. If you’ve got a dev account, go get them – we’re downloading now and will report back with the juicy bits!
