iPhone 4 now available unlocked in the US

Open sesame

For as long as this website has been around, we’ve been fielding emails from readers asking whether an iPhone bought in the US will work here in New Zealand, and the answer has always been ‘no’ as, unlike here in New Zealand, the iPhone has always been locked to AT&T in the USA… until now. Apple are now selling the iPhone 4 unlocked in the USA via the Apple Store retail outlets and online store, meaning it can be purchased and used on any compatible network anywhere in the world. But how much are they and how can you get your hands on one? Keep reading for the details.…

White iPhone 4 available in NZ from today (or tomorrow?)

Tomorrow, tomorrow, we love you tomorrow.

Well, this has been a long time coming and you’d have to be a pretty staunch fan of the colour white to have stuck it out this long, but Apple have officially confirmed that the white iPhone 4 will be available in New Zealand from today. Pricing and specs are identical to the existing black model, and you’ll be able to order from the online store. The full press release is after the break but note that while the PR groups the NZ  and US release date as 28/04, the Apple NZ website currently says ‘coming tomorrow’ and is still absent from the store itself so our guess is that we’re looking at a release date of 28/04 US time, which is of course 29/04 here.

UPDATE: The white iPhone is now available through Vodafone.

UPDATE 2: The Apple Store website is currently down. Expect to find White iPhone 4′s when it comes back up.…

FTW: Exclusive: White iPhone 4 lands at Vodafone UK — Engadget

Story via engadget

Well, would you have a gander at that? That, friends, is Apple’s long-awaited, hardly-forgotten white iPhone 4, and so far as we can tell, this is actually the real deal. We’ve seen retailers making space for the elusive handset over the past few months, and earlier today, we heard that Vodafone UK’s inventory systems were showing the white iPhone 4 as shipping in. Now, we’ve secured a few images of a 16GB model from a separate source that has seemingly made its way into the hands of one lucky customer (read: bloke) over in Britain.

FTW: Apple skips MWC, wins Mobile Device of the Year anyway

Story via TUAW

Apple doesn’t do trade shows anymore, even popular ones that contain names of its products, so it’s not surprising that the company skipped out on the 2011 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. But here’s the funny part: even though the company itself didn’t show up, one of its products won a major award anyway; Mobile World Congress judged the iPhone 4 as 2011 Mobile Device of the Year.

iPad as sole means of mobile communication: is it possible?

iPad as Telephone

A question I get asked a lot and I’m sure some of you will have been asked, too, is “why do you need an iPhone and an iPad?” The honest answer (although rarely admitted) is you don’t need both… you just want them both.

Recently I have been considering saying goodbye to my iPhone 4 and once released later this year using a 64gb WiFi 3G iPad 2 as my sole means of communication. No this is not an early April fools’ and yes, you did read that correctly: goodbye, iPhone 4.

I realise the stage I have chosen to propose ditching the iPhone 4 on could have been better. Proposing this to iPhone enthusiasts on an iPhone blog isn’t going to be an easy sell but before you judge me and shout blasphemy carry on reading to find out why.

FTW: Apple Works on Line of Less-Expensive iPhones

Story via WJS

Apple Inc. is working on the first of a new line of iPhones and an overhaul of software services for the devices, people familiar with the matter said, moving to accelerate sales of its smartphones amid growing competition.

One of the people, who saw a prototype of the phone late last year, said the device is intended for sale alongside Apple’s existing line. The new device would be about half the size of the iPhone 4, which is the current model.

What is this letter ‘Q’ in the corner of my iPhone’s phone app?

What is this?

Today I noticed this strange, half of a letter ‘Q’ in the upper left-hand corner of my iPhone 4. It only appears when I’m in the phone app, but it appears on every page of it. It has me completely bamboozled. Having googled it, I can find one other blog where this has been documented but there are no clear answers as to what it is or why it happens. Anyone else had this? Hit the comments! (More screenshots after the break).…

VoBack replacement iPhone 4 backs, available right here in New Zealand

Like Christmas

Back in December we posted a quick look at a silver back that Dan had bought for his iPhone 4. It caused quite a stir as the back is unexpectedly easy to replace and the ability to customise is certainly appealing – from the comments we can see that quite a few of you went off and bought one. We were then contacted by a Christchurch-based company called VoBack who offer similar backs, and they were kind enough to supply us with some samples. Let’s take a look at how the iPhone 4 can be transformed with a bit of colour and texture!…

TIP: Enable iOS AirPrint for ALL networked printers in Mac OS X… and then some

Printopia

For no apparent reason, Apple pulled the support for the highly anticipated (and hyped) iOS feature AirPrint in the final build of Mac OS X 10.6.5. The feature was set to allow any iOS device running 4.2 to print wirelessly to any networked printer on a Mac running 10.6.5. Consequently, the only printers you can print to are a handful of (natively enabled) HP printers. For anybody interested the list of those HP printers can be found here.

For the rest of us who are not willing to buy a new printer just for this feature we are going to take a look at a pretty much 1-click solution to enable AirPrint on ALL networked printers… and a little more. Carry on reading for the full run-down.…
