#4SonXT Launch parties how did they go? [video] [gallery]

As you may or may not have heard Telecom threw a couple of launch events last night to celebrate getting the iPhone 4S. Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch seemed to get the queues whilst Dunedin didn’t have much of anything. However in the other three centres a great time was had by all and, as far as we know, no one went home disappointed or empty-handed. iOS 5.0.1 goes live… promises to fix battery woes and more

This morning iOS 5.0.1 has gone live to the public and according to the release notes, among other things, will fix battery issues from iOS 5 and will improve voice recognition for dictation with an Australian accent. No doubt it will also seem a lot snappier, smoother and faster then any previously release of iOS as well… but don’t all new updates?? See below for full details of the update.

With less than 24 hours to go we thought we’d make sure you know what is happening for the launch parties (yes, parties!) Telecom will be hosting at 12:01am and what happens if you are not in a “main centre”.

Now, before anybody asks why we haven’t done a post like this for Vodafone, the reason is simple: Vodafone haven’t announced any launch details for us to give you. Telecom have been very up-front with prices, plans, launch times and registration processes with very little left in doubt and that’s a massively refreshing approach compared to the fiasco of last year’s iPhone 4 (un)launch from Vodafone. If we do hear anything from Big Red, we’ll let you know. Info on the Vodafone launch can be found here.

Finally!! Telecom to get the iPhone 4S!

Finally after much will-they-won’t-they and then the whole website-links-coming-and-going thing, Telecom have finally stepped up and announced that they will indeed be offering the iPhone (all versions) and what’s more they will be launching the devices at 12:01am on 11th in the 4 major centres (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin). Finally the day has come… iOS 5 is available for the general population to download. The update is available now via iTunes for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 3rd and 4th gen, iPad, iPad 2, and Apple TV 2.

There’s a whole raft of new features (over 200 of them), too many for us to go through, but below is a list of the main ones (via Apple). We thought we’d leave it up to you guys to tell us what you think, what you’ve found, what you like and what you dislike. Facebook for iPad available now

Yes that’s right folks, Facebook have finally released their app for the iPad and it’s available at the link below. They have also issued an update to the iPhone app and from our initial look at it, it’s a pretty nice update with a whole new interface. Apple to hold iPhone event October 4th (US time)

Finally, after months of rumour, we have a date! As reported by The Loop, Apple has begun sending out media invites for an iPhone event to be held at the company’s Cupertino headquarters on October 4th (October 5th in NZ). The invite specifically says “Let’s Talk iPhone” so there seems little doubt that next generation of the device will be unveiled. Other than that, details remain under wraps as per usual. So, what are your predictions? iPhone 4S? iPhone 5? Both? Hit the comments!

iPad 2 – Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + 3G?

While standing in the checkout queue of my favourite Apple reseller a few weeks ago, I found myself helping a young lady decide which iPad 2 option was most appropriate for her needs. She was specifically interested in the cheaper Wi-Fi only version and asked about the ease and reliability of tethering to her iPhone 4. I’m not sure which option she eventually chose, but I remember grappling with the decision myself before selecting my own iPad 2 and figured that what I’ve learned since may be of help to others.

A few weeks ago I reviewed the new iteration of the official Trademe app. As you may recall, I gave it very good marks overall, but did cite some missing features. One of the features that went unmentioned was the ability to combine multiple photos and upload them to your account. So unless you could use Photoshop you were in for multiple picture fees.

However, stress not! There is an app for that, at least there will be soon, thanks to Chewy Applications. Let’s take an exclusive look at TradeKiwi which will hit the marketplace soon.

Slightly later than the usual 2 week beta cycle, Apple just a few minutes ago released iOS 5 beta 2 to developers. Despite rumors, this is a regular download and not the first over the air software update some were expecting. We are downloading this at the moment and will of course bring you anything new and noteworthy. By now you’ve no doubt heard about a certain iOS database file called consolidated.db. It made quite a splash yesterday when a pair of researchers, Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden, from O’Reilly Media announced the “iPhone tracking software” the duo had “discovered hidden on the phones.” Here’s the problem: they didn’t discover it, at least not originally. The file, known to hold large amounts of geolocation data collected from WiFi access points and cell-towers, has been probed by forensic experts ever since the retail launch of the iPhone 4 back in June of 2010. Hell, Sean Morrissey and Alex Levinson published a physical book on the topic back in December 2010, entire excerpts of which can easily be found on Google. So either the team from O’Reilly is being disingenuous with its claims or it’s being lazy.

Regardless, the story laid dormant for months until the O’Reilly team was able to visualize the data in a very personal way. Running the team’s open-source iPhoneTracker software to see the detailed locations of our worldly travels is absolutely fascinating. Imagining the same data file in the hands of a stalker, misguided detective, or a jealous lover is downright creepy.

But how is it possible that an issue like this has avoided the tech community at large for more than a year? And more importantly, what can you do about it? Read on to find out.

1-Night.co.nz is an online, card based, ticketing site that allows you to purchase tickets for events happening around the country. When you have purchased the ticket of choice, it loads it onto a card which you can then swipe at the event to gain entrance. It’s a great idea and great use of technology. Whoa, Nelly. Ready for another round? The elusive white iPhone — spotted only in the hands of Woz and occasionally in those of our own Richard Lai — may ship after all. After hearing from Apple that it was being delayed twice in 2010, we’ve heard an extended radio silence ever since. Sure, we’ve seen hints here and there from third parties that this here unicorn was still making its way through the production line, but there’s nothing quite like a direct tweet from Cupertino’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing to really rekindle some interest. In response to a question on how to obtain a white iPhone, Philip Schiller fired back: “The white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty!).” That’s about as clear-cut as it gets for now, but we’ve still got a few inquiries we’d love answered. Is he talking about the iPhone 4, or the next one in the pipeline? And does he have any intention of building us up, only to let us down (let us down) once more? We shall see, won’t we?

Within hours of the official release of iOS 4.3, developers have found further evidence that Apple plans to use its dual-core A5 processor in the next-generation iPhone.

Developers have found references to the A5 processor in a kernel file for a device codenamed N94AP, widely assumed to be the iPhone 5, within the code for iOS 4.3, as reported by iClarified.

I am based in the UK, but previously lived in Seattle (hence the username). I, much like Dan, am hooked on Apple and keep my ear to the ground for the latest news. FTW: Apple skips MWC, wins Mobile Device of the Year anyway

Apple doesn’t do trade shows anymore, even popular ones that contain names of its products, so it’s not surprising that the company skipped out on the 2011 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. But here’s the funny part: even though the company itself didn’t show up, one of its products won a major award anyway; Mobile World Congress judged the iPhone 4 as 2011 Mobile Device of the Year.

iPad as sole means of mobile communication: is it possible?

A question I get asked a lot and I’m sure some of you will have been asked, too, is “why do you need an iPhone and an iPad?” The honest answer (although rarely admitted) is you don’t need both… you just want them both.

Recently I have been considering saying goodbye to my iPhone 4 and once released later this year using a 64gb WiFi 3G iPad 2 as my sole means of communication. No this is not an early April fools’ and yes, you did read that correctly: goodbye, iPhone 4.

I realise the stage I have chosen to propose ditching the iPhone 4 on could have been better. Proposing this to iPhone enthusiasts on an iPhone blog isn’t going to be an easy sell but before you judge me and shout blasphemy carry on reading to find out why.

FTW: iPhone 5 to feature a bigger 4-inch display?

Thus far we still know surprisingly little about the next generation iPhone (or iPhone 5 for lack of a better name) expected this summer in keeping with Apple’s traditional launch cycle. We’ve heard that the completely redesigned handset will boast a next generation A5 processor and Qualcomm chipset that will unify the CDMA / GSM / UMTS radios. Others have heard that it’ll also feature NFC integration along with the possibility of a “universal SIM.” But what about the display?

Telecom’s iPhone SIM only offer extended again… now until 28th Feb

In case you hadn’t heard Telecom don’t sell the iPhone, however they do want you on their network. They have been offering a $600 account credit when you bring your iPhone to XT (with certain terms) and in November last year they extended the offer in an effort to try an entice more iPhone customers to the network. This ended on 31st January, however due to popular demand they have extended the offer for 2 more weeks (from now) and it expires on 28th February. Apple Inc. is working on the first of a new line of iPhones and an overhaul of software services for the devices, people familiar with the matter said, moving to accelerate sales of its smartphones amid growing competition.

One of the people, who saw a prototype of the phone late last year, said the device is intended for sale alongside Apple’s existing line. The new device would be about half the size of the iPhone 4, which is the current model.

Kiwi App Review: Domino’s Pizza app emerges fresh from the oven

Mmmmm, pizza! There’s nothing quite like it to slay a raging hunger, and there’s nothing more convenient than ordering it from home and having it delivered to your door. Until now, trying to place such an order on an iPhone or iPad has been a frustrating experience due mainly to an unhealthy reliance on Adobe Flash. Pizza Hut’s website is built entirely on Flash and visiting it from an iPhone or iPad results in nothing but a blank screen – not even a courtesy ‘Sorry, we do not currently support your device’ message. Domino’s Pizza’s website does have an HTML version of their online ordering service, however it’s clunky and slow. Luckily the company have just launched their iPhone ordering app here in NZ, so if you’re hungry to learn more stick with me and we’ll take a look.Read More

For the love of God, don’t use your iPhone on Air New Zealand’s new Airbus flights

According to a story in The Herald today, Vodafone and Air New Zealand have announced a new service which will allow passengers on domestic flights using the new black Airbus A320′s to use their mobile phones on-board, in-flight. Some of you have seen the cool wallpaper that both Steve and I use for our iPhones and we keep getting asked (both on the site and via email) where did we get it from and how can you get it. Well originally we got it from long time reader Camtab when he posted a comment with it in.

iOS 4.3 Personal Hotspot… is it any good?

As you may or may not have read, iOS 4.3 comes with a new feature called “Personal Hotspot” which, simply put, creates a personal wi-fi hotspot for you to use anywhere you have your iPhone. It also replaces/updates the Tethering option. ‘Tethering” is no longer available per se, instead it now all comes under the one umbrella.

What is this letter ‘Q’ in the corner of my iPhone’s phone app?

Today I noticed this strange, half of a letter ‘Q’ in the upper left-hand corner of my iPhone 4. It only appears when I’m in the phone app, but it appears on every page of it. Back in December we posted a quick look at a silver back that Dan had bought for his iPhone 4. iPhone alarm now working again as predicted

For those of you blighted by the iPhone’s second alarm failure, you can breathe a sigh of relief… for now. I just tried a non-repeating alarm and as per the predictions from 9to5 Mac, this is now working again. What made the alarm fail for the first two days of the year is somewhat of a mystery right now, but we’ve contacted Apple for comment and will let you know if we receive a response. Interestingly, this doesn’t seem to be restricted to just the iPhone: I set my iMac to boot-up at 6am every morning via System Preferences, however this didn’t work on the 1st or 2nd either, but did today so it would seem that this glitch goes deeper than just iOS.

One thing is for certain: Apple need to sort this out. It’s astounding to me that with all the innovation and powerful, game-changing features built into iOS, the real core features of a smartphone such as alarms and calendar entries continue to either evade Cupertino’s mastery or appear to be unimportant to them. Bugs that cause alarms to go off early or not at all and birthdays to appear a day late in calendars are all things that, given the maturity of iOS, need to be stamped out right now.Read More
