iTunes in the cloud now available from New Zealand store

Amongst other updates that are coming with iCloud, Apple has quietly updated the iTunes Store on iOS 5 to now allow for iTunes in the Cloud, meaning the music you purchase in iTunes appears automatically on all your devices and you can also download your past iTunes purchases.

It needs to be activated by going to “Settings >> Store” and then you will see that under Automatic downloads there is now a Music option. This will likely already be there once you download iOS 5 if you are not a dev and don’t currently have it. Once you have done that you will see purchases in the iTunes app and you will be able to download your pas purchases.

Unfortunately iTunes Match is still only available for U.S account holders. Image gallery after the break…

Apple triples the length of song previews on NZ iTunes store

Apple has rolled out ninety-second song previews on the iTunes Store here in New Zealand, along with several other territories including Australia, Canada and the UK. This triples the amount of a song you can listen to before buying and makes it far easier to get a feel for the complete track. Thirty seconds was never really enough and previews would often cut off just before the chorus, leaving you in doubt as to whether you actually like it or not. The change is live now and affects both iTunes for Mac / PC as well as the iTunes app on iOS devices. It follows the same change being made to the US iTunes store in December of last year.

How to save upto 25% off OS X Lion

If you’ve got a Mac and you’re planning on buying OS X Lion when it comes out, there’s a quick and easy way to save upto 25% off that purchase. Lion will be sold via the Mac App Store which is actually the same account (and therefore the same funds) as your iTunes account. To save, all you need to do is take advantage of any sales or special offers on iTunes gift cards between now and the launch of Lion. The biggest discount we’ve seen is 25% which is just what Harvey Norman happen to have off this very weekend – they are selling two $20 cards for $30. Lion will sell in NZ for $38.99 which is already a steal for a whole new OS, but with a further 25% it’s daylight robbery so get into it.

iTunes 10.5 beta preferences allows you to choose to Automatically Download Apps and Books

With iTunes 10.5 beta just installed a quick look in the preferences shows you that you can now choose to Automatically Download Apps and/or Books that you have purchased on other devices straight to iTunes. No more having to connect your device and then sync your purchases.

Remember this is in the beta only.

iTunes Home Sharing to iOS 4.3 Devices

One iTunes Account, One App, One GameCenter ID… no more app sharing?

Apple about to make ‘exciting announcement’ about iTunes (Update: It’s The Beatles)

Well this is exciting… Apple just updated the splash screen of their website to the above graphic. We have no idea what it means, but at 4am tomorrow morning all will be revealed. Want to place bets on what’s in store? iTunes subscriptions or streaming from the cloud seem the only obvious possibilities but hit us up in the comments if you have any other bright ideas.

UPDATE: The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the announcement will be the Beatles catalogue being added to iTunes, which has been part of a legal battle between Apple and the Fab Four ever since iTunes was launched. Not particularly exciting to us, but we can see how Mr Jobs and co would consider this a milestone.

UPDATE 17/11/10: Yup, it’s The Beatles. ‘Nuff said, but you can now find them right here on iTunes.

iTunes 10.1 released, support for AirPlay and iOS 4.2 included

Earlier this morning, Apple released the new version of their iTunes software, which now boasts the ability to sync with the new iOS 4.2 due out very soon. Support has also been added for the promised ‘AirPlay’ feature which allows owners of the new Apple TV to stream media from their iTunes library to their TV.

A Mac Rumors report suggests that iOS 4.2 may not come until next week, however this iTunes upgrade is a sure sign it’s on its way.

Tomorrow’s Apple event: Your predictions please [UPDATE: Event to be live-streamed]

In case you’ve been living under an Apple-proof rock for the last fortnight then you’ll already know that an Apple event is taking place Sept 1st – that’s tomorrow (02/09) 5am NZ time. This time of year is traditionally when Cupertino unveil refreshed iPods, and from the graphic it’s clear that music is at the heart of the event. An updated iPod touch with front-facing camera and FaceTime is almost a certainty, but there are rumours (as usual) that the event could also be used to announce a slew of other goodies including an all-new Apple TV (iTV), cloud-based iTunes, TV show rentals (for the US), iOS 4 for the iPad, and the release date for the white iPhone 4. We want your predictions, so hit the comments and put your stake in the sand!

UPDATE: Apple have just announced that for the first time they will be live streaming the event on the Apple website. So if any of you are going to be up at 5am and were planning on a date with the refresh button, great news! – You can now sit back and watch the whole thing live. Note that PC owners are left in the dark – this will be available on Mac, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad only

iTunes 9.2.1 available now

Yes, we’re a bit late with this one but iTunes 9.2.1 is ready to download now. It addresses a whole bunch of fixes as well as a hand-full of new features including the ability to create / organise your home-screen folders from within iTunes as well as import PDFs as books to sync to iBooks. iTunes security investigated the Fair Go way

In case you missed tonight’s episode of Fair Go, TV One’s consumer watchdog programme has been investigating allegations of security issues with iTunes accounts and the result is somewhat inconclusive to say the least. The story revolves around a chap whose iTunes account was apparently ‘hacked’ to the tune of $800 in a month. No actual evidence of hackery was offered, above and beyond the victim saying he didn’t make the purchases that appeared on his credit card bill, and while I totally feel for him, I can’t help but think that this could simply be a case of his password being shared with or overseen by the wrong person rather than an endemic case of iTunes security flaws. Music Top Tens are back in iTunes

Well, that was pretty quick. Following on from my post this weekend about the missing top tens section in the iPhone iTunes Store, it looks like Apple have resolved the problem and the top tens are back. I’m sure that Kanye West will sleep soundly tonight knowing that he can once again update his pie charts tracking the popularity index of Beyonce in ratio to Taylor Swift without having to fire up his desktop PC.

The music “Top Tens” section of the iPhone iTunes store in New Zealand has been missing in action since the release of iPhone OS 3.1.
