Kiwi dev linked to rogue premium-rate dialler, costing Brits dearly

Not so orsome news

British online tech publication The Register have posted an interesting piece involving New Zealand iPhone developer Orsome and AdMob advertising. An advert embedded into the free version of Orsome’s Bubblewrap game featured an AdMob advert which, when clicked, dialled a premium-rate phone number without warning which has racked up large bills for some unsuspecting British users of the app. It’s an interesting read and the first we’ve heard of the bogus practice that was once commonplace on dial-up internet connections. Read on for the link. [Thanks for the heads-up, Ivan]

Kiwi app review: Chopper

Chopper! Refreshing an 80s classic

Ah, Defender. How many shiny silver coins I wasted in your good name in my youth! For the uninitiated, Defender was a sideways-scrolling shoot-em-up from 1980 in which you controlled a spaceship on an alien planet. The aim of the game was to kill aliens (I believe that was a mandatory sub-plot of all games in the 1980s) and rescue humans, whilst trying to not to crash your spacecraft. Now, in 2009, Kiwi developers Majic Jungle have re-made this classic game in the shape of Chopper for iPhone. But is it worthy of its predecessor?…

With a miriad of choices from silicone skins to polycarbonate transparent shells, iPhone users are very well catered for in the protection of their new devices. Does Voice Control understand the Kiwi accent?
