Announcement: iPhonewzealand is closing
With heavy hearts, the time has come for us to announce that we’re going to be closing iPhonewzealand as at 20th February, 2012. With some help from contributors along the way, we (Dan and Steve) have run the site with every ounce of the spare time that we have been able to sacrifice outside of our normal jobs and family lives. At times this has been quite gruelling, especially around the launch of new devices, so it’s fair to say that this action is also due to a desire to free up some of that precious time.
We’ve been operating since July 2009, back when the device was relatively new and had official support with only one mobile operator in New Zealand, so there was a need for a site like ours to help people get connected on other networks. Dan’s legendary carrier bundles made it possible for people to get going on the network of their choice quickly and easily.
We also helped spread the word about local apps and developers, keeping the ever-growing kiwi user-base up-to-date with news and reviews as an explosion of ‘big name’ kiwi apps such as TradeMe, Stuff and TVNZ hit the App Store.
As of now, new registrations to the site are closed. The site will continue to be here for a while, but with no further updates after this post. If you need to, you can get hold of us via the ‘Contact Us’ link until the site is taken down (in the event that it is not sold), or via our Twitter presence, @iphonewzealand, which will remain open (but mostly inactive) for a period of time.
We welcome any expressions of interest into buying the site or offers from anybody who might like to shower us with cash so that we can do this for a living — please feel free to get in touch with us via the ‘contact us’ button on the header of the site.
Steve Jobs once said that he just wanted to “put a ding in the universe”. That goes for us too, and we hope that on a much tinier scale we managed to do that.

Please give a warm welcome to our new writers
As you may know, quite a few weeks ago we advertised for additional writers for the site. We had a number of fantastic applications and we’d like to say thanks to everyone that applied. Yet again it was quite humbling to see all the kind words that were written about the site within the applications, so thanks again.
In the end we decided to take on three more new writers, this was for three reasons, 1. we couldn’t decide between them and 2. the more writers we have means the more posts we have and 3. Allan and Andy have both left our writing team to peruse other ventures, leaving space for three.

Grab our new iPhone app and donate to the NZ Red Cross Earthquake Appeal
We have just launched our second iPhone app in the App Store, which provides feeds from our site and iPhone settings for every NZ carrier, among other things. We are charging for this app so that we can give something back to the people of Christchurch following Tuesday’s deadly quake. The App is priced at $2.59 until the end of March and all proceeds from our cut of the sales will go to the NZ Red Cross (30% will still go to Apple, which we cannot avoid). Why not download it now to give to the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal.

Site on hold due to earthquake

Merry Christmas to all our readers
To all our readers, we at iPhonewzealand would just like to extend our heart-felt wishes for a very Merry Christmas for you and all your families. 2010 has been another fantastic year for us and we really appreciate all the continued support you’ve given us. The positive feedback we’ve had throughout the year and the blinding work coming out of New Zealand’s development community is what keeps us going, and we’ve really enjoyed giving something back to the kiwi iPhone community.
This year we had four new writers join the team, Paul, Mak, Allan and Andy and we’d like you to join us in thanking them for their input into the site (they do it for free you know).
We’ll be raising our glasses in your honour and are really looking forward to 2011! As we are winding down now, posts to the site will be thin on the ground between now and the new year, but we hope you’ll be with us when we’re back in full swing in the new year.

And so it starts…. Apple iPhone Dev program down…. and up again
Well folks, here we go….. The iPhone Developer Connection pages are down and as a guess I would say it *may* have something to do with the new SDK that is rumored to hit at the Apple event in the morning…. what do you reckon?
As a note we realise it went down earlier for what seemed like usual maintenance, so it could come back any time seemingly without any changes, but you can bet your bottom dollar something is going on back there.
We’ll be checking this regularly until we fall asleep and then when we wake up for changes.
UPDATE: Looks like it is back. It has been up and down most of the day, we’ll leave this one till the morning but will keep a keen eye for anything new.…
