Telecom’s new Skinny sub-brand soft-launches, config profile available for iOS 5 devices

Telecom has begun to quietly roll out its new ‘Skinny’ sub-brand, which offers pre-paid mobile services over its XT Network with alternative pricing packages and a completely separate brand identity. Looking at the pricing and plans on the company’s website the service does appear to be geared towards calling and texting primarily, but a data add-on of $4 per week for 120MB of data (so roughly $16 per month for 480MB) may be of interest to some iPhone users. Skinny has posted a config profile on Geekzone that can easily be installed on your iPhone should you decide to make the hop, in which case you’ll also need to request a free MicroSIM which you can do through the website or by calling 0800 4754669.

As you may or may not have heard Telecom threw a couple of launch events last night to celebrate getting the iPhone 4S. Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch seemed to get the queues whilst Dunedin didn’t have much of anything. However in the other three centres a great time was had by all and, as far as we know, no one went home disappointed or empty-handed. Normally we wouldn’t re-post articles direct from another site to the front page, they would site under the ‘FTW’ (from the web) category in the sidebar, but this one seemed to good to pass up. As reported by Chris Keall of NBR although “Telecom may not be an official Apple carrier, its technology-neutral Gen-i division still sells iPhones and iPads– and its boss knows how to use them; including the value-add Mobile Me service, which syncs devices, and can be use used to run a GPS trace.”

So when Mr Quinn had his iPhone stolen, the iPad and MobileMe service came to the rescue.

Telcos offer free Micro SIMs to iPad 2-goers

Telecom New Zealand has just announced a reward for those who have been lining up all day for an iPad 2 – a Micro SIM giveaway (with a generous 2GB of mobile data!) to each person at YooBee Newmarket. 2degrees also seems to be following suit, with details of a similar promotion likely to be announced very shortly. People who purchase an iPad 2 at leading Auckland retailers may get a special gift afterwards (which has turned out to be a Micro SIM pre-loaded with 12GB of data!).

iPad 2 offers capability parity between Vodafone and XT

Well look what we found in the tech specs. It turns out the new iPad 2 is going to bring the big red and the big blue into parallel on their networks. Why? Quad Band 3G.

Telecom’s iPhone SIM only offer extended again… now until 28th Feb

In case you hadn’t heard Telecom don’t sell the iPhone, however they do want you on their network. They have been offering a $600 account credit when you bring your iPhone to XT (with certain terms) and in November last year they extended the offer in an effort to try an entice more iPhone customers to the network. This ended on 31st January, however due to popular demand they have extended the offer for 2 more weeks (from now) and it expires on 28th February. XT’s bonus top up credit ends, everything’s gonna be 33% more

Since the 13th October 2009 any Telecom XT prepaid mobile customer that topped up would receive an additional bonus credit depending on how much you topped up. That bonus credit equated to around 33% of the top-up value and really made a difference to your balance, especially if you topped up with $60 and got $80. Telecom Voicemail Viewer launching today: Next best thing to Visual Voicemail?

It may not be actual Visual Voicemail, but this could be the next best thing to it in New Zealand. Telecom are launching a new Voicemail service this morning called Voicemail Viewer whereby when a voicemail is left for you a SMS is sent detailing who called, when they called, the length of the message, and — here’s the killer bit — a number to dial to access that specific message, bypassing any others that might be waiting. No more having to wade through other messages and inane voice prompts to get to that critical message from someone you actually care about. New postpaid customers joining XT from today will automatically get the service, existing customers can opt-in by calling 123 from 10am this morning or wait until February when mass migration will begin. You may remember back in August we let you know that when purchasing a Prepaid XT MicroSIM for $29.95 you would get $29.95 worth of data included (XT’s 500MB data plan). Well it would seem that offer is still going but it ends at the end of October (31st to be precise). Maybe this offer is to get people to move across to XT by then, but as a bonus Telecom are running a mobile data promotion until 31st October which will give you an extra 1GB of data, meaning you’ll have 1.5GB to play with. XT MicroSIMs back in stock, now include airtime (for a limited time)

When XT first launched their MicroSIMs they had very limited stock, in fact so much so that they sold out very quickly. Then along came 2degrees with their MicroSIMs who seem to have plenty of stock and not only that but they included airtime. Well now there’s some good news for XT users.

Uh-oh: iPhone 4 FaceTime not working on XT

OK We know what you are thinking: of course FaceTime does not work on XT or any other network for that matter, as Apple clearly stated in the iPhone 4 keynote that it will be wifi-only for the remainder of 2010… HOWEVER… FaceTime over wifi requires activation via your carrier and XT just isn’t having it. Telecom to fix SIM cards for Voicemail via over-the-air update. UPDATE: Not true.

Back at the end of last month, we reported that Telecom were to roll-out new SIM cards that would fix the non-functioning voicemail-button issue that has plagued iPhone owners on XT since updating to iOS 4 without our carrier bundle. Now, a source within Telecom has tonight (incorrectly – see update) confirmed that the erroneously-set MBDN field on their V1 and V2 SIM cards will be fixed via an over-the-air (OTA) update by the end of July, allowing iPhone users to set their Voicemail number.

XT Relaunched with 30-day risk free trial, Reynolds says “bugger!” [video]

After all of the outages on XT, Telecom have now relaunched their advertising campaign for XT which has been fronted by Telecom CEO Paul Reynolds.

They have also launched a “customer-friendly 30 day Risk Free Trial” which will enable users who sign up to an eligible 24 month plan when purchasing any XT mobile or Mobile Broadband T-Stick, to return the product within 30 days if they are not completely happy with their experience of XT – and receive a refund.

In this honest and comical ad Dr Reynolds confirms that XT is now finally fixed, saying “I reckon you should give XT a shot, it’s now working exactly as it should’ve done” and he pokes a bit of fun at Telecom which (although I’m sure some who were affected won’t find funny) is quite amusing and gives it the personal touch.

Telecom XT to get Micro SIMs

Telecom have announced via Twitter that they are soon to support the new Micro SIM standard. This means that the upcoming 3G iPad and unconfirmed ‘iPhone 4G’ will be compatible with Telecom’s XT network.

We are hearing unconfirmed rumblings about XT issues this morning, this time north of Taupo. We have asked Telecom for comment and will let you know if we hear anything but in the meantime let us know in the comments if you’re experiencing any issues. Everything seems sweet down here in Christchurch and Dunedin but we’re interested to know how you Northerners are going!

A very reliable source at Telecom has let us into a little secret… Telecom have just signed a deal with Apple to offer the iPad with term-contract subsidies and a range of data plans including an as-yet unpriced all-you-can-eat plan – the first of its kind in New Zealand. According to our source, Telecom has secured enough Micro-SIMs and 3G-equipped iPads to begin selling the device from its retail stores at a midnight launch on April 12th.Read More

Telecom’s IT subsidiary Gen-i about to sell and support iPhone?

Computerworld are currently running a story which states that Gen-i, Telecom’s IT arm, are to sell and support the iPhone as of this coming Monday. The piece is light on details but Gen-i are quoted in a statement made to Computerworld this morning, so it seems legit. In the statement Gen-i confirm that this is not a formal agreement between Apple and Telecom but “allows clients to take advantage of Gen-i’s extensive plans for its business clients”, so it seems that this is not a consumer offering. Paul Reynolds: “Enough is enough”, Alcatel-Lucent put on notice.

Telecom CEO Paul Reynolds has fronted-up to journalists at a press conference this afternoon over last night’s further XT outage, and the situation as a whole. He said that the company recognises the inconvenience that customers have been put to and announced a further compensation package for both consumer and business XT customers. An angry Reynolds spoke of how he feels “let down” by network operator Alcatel-Lucent, that “enough is enough” and that the company have been “put on notice” following this fourth outage.
