iPad 2 – Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + 3G?

While standing in the checkout queue of my favourite Apple reseller a few weeks ago, I found myself helping a young lady decide which iPad 2 option was most appropriate for her needs. She was specifically interested in the cheaper Wi-Fi only version and asked about the ease and reliability of tethering to her iPhone 4. I’m not sure which option she eventually chose, but I remember grappling with the decision myself before selecting my own iPad 2 and figured that what I’ve learned since may be of help to others.

iOS 4.3 Personal Hotspot… is it any good?

As you may or may not have read, iOS 4.3 comes with a new feature called “Personal Hotspot” which, simply put, creates a personal wi-fi hotspot for you to use anywhere you have your iPhone. It also replaces/updates the Tethering option. ‘Tethering” is no longer available per se, instead it now all comes under the one umbrella.

The question is, is it any good? The short answer is “Yes”, medium answer, “Yes, it is awesome” but keep reading for the long version, my reasons why and the downlow on what you need to do to get it working.

Orcon Settings now available

For those of you using you iPhone on Orcon we now have all the settings you need to get your iPhone up and running for Data, MMS and Tethering.

Orcon have provided us with the settings and they have also given us some funky wallpapers which you can download to your device.

No tethering on XT? How about a free T-Stick instead.

Warning for XT and 2degrees users: iPhone OS 3.1 disables tethering

A quick heads-up. The new OS 3.1, launched this morning, will break tethering for XT and 2degrees users. Do not download it if you require tethering, but go right ahead and update if you don’t.

What’s happened?…Apple now signs the apn’s within the carrier bundles. This means if there is no signature against the Tethering APN it will not work (all other functionality is fine though). We are working on a fix for this and as soon as we have it the bundles will be updated and we’ll let you know.

Tethering broken in OS 3.1 beta 2: Confirmed
