#4SonXT Launch parties how did they go? [video] [gallery]

As you may or may not have heard Telecom threw a couple of launch events last night to celebrate getting the iPhone 4S. Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch seemed to get the queues whilst Dunedin didn’t have much of anything. However in the other three centres a great time was had by all and, as far as we know, no one went home disappointed or empty-handed. Details for Telecom’s iPhone 4S launch parties [poll] [launch-pics]

With less than 24 hours to go we thought we’d make sure you know what is happening for the launch parties (yes, parties!) Telecom will be hosting at 12:01am and what happens if you are not in a “main centre”.

You’ll find a poll below to let us know your plans are and our live blog will kick off in earnest later on this evening. Click here for that. (moved all the pics over to flickr to save bandwidth)

Now, before anybody asks why we haven’t done a post like this for Vodafone, the reason is simple: Vodafone haven’t announced any launch details for us to give you. Telecom have been very up-front with prices, plans, launch times and registration processes with very little left in doubt and that’s a massively refreshing approach compared to the fiasco of last year’s iPhone 4 (un)launch from Vodafone. If we do hear anything from Big Red, we’ll let you know. Info on the Vodafone launch can be found here.

Finally!! Telecom to get the iPhone 4S!

Finally after much will-they-won’t-they and then the whole website-links-coming-and-going thing, Telecom have finally stepped up and announced that they will indeed be offering the iPhone (all versions) and what’s more they will be launching the devices at 12:01am on 11th in the 4 major centres (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin). App Review: Quota

Most people have heard of Consume by now, in fact we did a review of it when it first came out. It has become the industry standard usage app for the iOS. However Bjango has not updated it for sometime and is not natively iPad compatible, which is leading to a clunky and rather utilitarian UI.

However, there is now a new kid on the block. Quota (by SouthFreo) may be new, but it is sleek, sexy and worth a look.

iPad 2 Quick Hands On

America. Land of hope, Land of opportunity, and land of the iPad 2. The latter of these 3 is in extremely short supply at the moment. With online orders now showing a 4 to 5 week delivery time and retail stores, including Apple’s flagship stores, reportedly sold out we are considering ourselves very lucky right now as our iPad 2 was delivered on Thursday. We will be doing an in depth review closer to or around the NZ launch but for now hit the read more for a quick look and our initial thoughts.

iPad 2 offers capability parity between Vodafone and XT

Well look what we found in the tech specs. It turns out the new iPad 2 is going to bring the big red and the big blue into parallel on their networks. Why? Quad Band 3G.

XT’s bonus top up credit ends, everything’s gonna be 33% more

Since the 13th October 2009 any Telecom XT prepaid mobile customer that topped up would receive an additional bonus credit depending on how much you topped up. That bonus credit equated to around 33% of the top-up value and really made a difference to your balance, especially if you topped up with $60 and got $80. This has now ended (as of Feb 1st) and has been replaced with a new promotion called TOPUP & WIN. But is it any good? Read on.Read More

Telecom: unable to get money-making deal with Apple

Tonight at the Telecom New Zealand Retail Consumer Summit, Telecom have openly explained why they do not (yet) carry the iPhone: they can’t get agree on a deal with Apple that will “enable them to make money”.

That’s right 1.5GB of data for $29.95….

You may remember back in August we let you know that when purchasing a Prepaid XT MicroSIM for $29.95 you would get $29.95 worth of data included (XT’s 500MB data plan). Well it would seem that offer is still going but it ends at the end of October (31st to be precise). Maybe this offer is to get people to move across to XT by then, but as a bonus Telecom are running a mobile data promotion until 31st October which will give you an extra 1GB of data, meaning you’ll have 1.5GB to play with. XT MicroSIMs back in stock, now include airtime (for a limited time)

When XT first launched their MicroSIMs they had very limited stock, in fact so much so that they sold out very quickly. Then along came 2degrees with their MicroSIMs who seem to have plenty of stock and not only that but they included airtime. Well now there’s some good news for XT users.

Telecom: “We’re ready for iPhone 4 users”, new Smartphone Extra plan launched

Well, it seems like everybody is making iPhone announcements today except Vodafone. Telecom have just announced that it’s “ready for iPhone 4 users” and has introduced a new ‘Smartphone Extra’ plan with double data allowances for the next three months. This means XT customers can now opt to add 1GB of data and 2500 text messages for $38
per month to any prepaid or postpaid voice plan until the end of September. Read on for the full press release but at this stage we have to say: seriously, Vodafone, where are you guys? Seems like everybody is at this party but the host! Whatever you’re holding back… it better be good!

XT Relaunched with 30-day risk free trial, Reynolds says “bugger!” [video]

After all of the outages on XT, Telecom have now relaunched their advertising campaign for XT which has been fronted by Telecom CEO Paul Reynolds.

They have also launched a “customer-friendly 30 day Risk Free Trial” which will enable users who sign up to an eligible 24 month plan when purchasing any XT mobile or Mobile Broadband T-Stick, to return the product within 30 days if they are not completely happy with their experience of XT – and receive a refund.

In this honest and comical ad Dr Reynolds confirms that XT is now finally fixed, saying “I reckon you should give XT a shot, it’s now working exactly as it should’ve done” and he pokes a bit of fun at Telecom which (although I’m sure some who were affected won’t find funny) is quite amusing and gives it the personal touch.

Data speeds on the iPhone, between Vodafone and XT, are a much discussed topic. There are many different sides of the story and many different reasons behind the results of speed tests. I would suggest that everyone take from this just a view to Ahmad’s experience at the given time in the given location. Some of you may have different experiences and speeds so it would be good to hear your thoughts.

Personally for me the XT speeds, where I use my iPhone, are much faster than that of Vodafone but that is not to say that other areas where you may use it won’t be different.

Paul Reynolds: “Enough is enough”, Alcatel-Lucent put on notice.

Telecom CEO Paul Reynolds has fronted-up to journalists at a press conference this afternoon over last night’s further XT outage, and the situation as a whole. He said that the company recognises the inconvenience that customers have been put to and announced a further compensation package for both consumer and business XT customers. An angry Reynolds spoke of how he feels “let down” by network operator Alcatel-Lucent, that “enough is enough” and that the company have been “put on notice” following this fourth outage. Telecom has tweeted confirmation this morning that they are aware of issues that are affecting areas south of Taupo and that engineers are working to restore service. Warning for XT and 2degrees users: iPhone OS 3.1 disables tethering

A quick heads-up. The new OS 3.1, launched this morning, will break tethering for XT and 2degrees users. Do not download it if you require tethering, but go right ahead and update if you don’t.

What’s happened?…Apple now signs the apn’s within the carrier bundles. This means if there is no signature against the Tethering APN it will not work (all other functionality is fine though). We are working on a fix for this and as soon as we have it the bundles will be updated and we’ll let you know.

Telecom enter the iPhone market with SIM-only offer

Telecom’s new XT Network, a 100% 3G network operating at 850Mhz in 97% of the places that New Zealanders live, work and play, was practically built to support the iPhone. It’s specs match the Jesus phone perfectly, leaving Vodafone’s network support for the device looking shakey at best. So it’s only natural that users have been holding their breaths waiting for Telecom to announce official support for the iPhone, and placing a crucial second offer on the table for would-be or existing iPhone users.
